Need summer vacation recommendations

I'm out of ideas for a summer family vacation and need some help. "Kids" are now college-aged, but we still want a chance to get away for a week or so as a family. What's the best summer vacation experience you've had that we should consider? Thanks!

Just now saw this thread. The best place for a summer rental, IMO, is St Georges Island in Florida. It is a hidden spot that very few people go to. Very nice homes and the beach is pretty secluded. Great fresh seafood at the local places and you are not bombarded with tourist stuff. For a relaxing vacation, this is your spot.

Send me a PM if you need any info on it.

Drive or fly from Austin. We're pretty open-ended at this point. Just looking for fun summer vacation experiences that others have had that perhaps we haven't. We've traveled quite a bit so there's a lot of been there-done that whenever we think of something. We tend not to go back to a previous destination very often.

St Georges looks interesting. I'll definitely explore that some more. Any other summer vacation destinations that we should know about?

Key west isn't bad. It's got some neat history. There is stuff you can do as a family, there is stuff the wife can do and stuff for the guys and a nightlife if you are so inclined. A week might be a stretch unless you really like to fish.

Re ski places: Lake Tahoe is just as beautiful in the summer.

Otherwise, I'll suggest Seattle. Late July - October are almost guaranteed good weather. Plus you have Portland 2.5 hours away, Vancouver/Victoria BC (need a passport), mountains, water, hiking, big city stuff...

I'd highly recommend Silverton, Colorado. It's a blast..used to go there every summer with my parents..lots of jeep trails, rafting, if that is your kind of thing. There's some other people here on the board that have been there, so they could probably give some good recommendations.

I'd say Telluride or Lake Tahoe out west.

out east I'd say Maine coast or Nova Scotia. (i can narrow it down if you want)

I can support the traverse city recommendation. The weather is great in summer. There are numerous wineries, great lake actvity (pun intended), excellent restaurants, some of the best fly fishing around. I have spent summer vacation there off and on for 30 years. The Leelanau Penisula is exceptional. One comment, Michigan fans do still remember that rose bowl! But they've been good natured about it.

tmiller3,

You wouldn't own a house facing the West Bay in the Old Mission Peninsula area?

We were driving through there several years ago and about 3 or 4 houses were flying Texas flags. I was surprised to see them given the distance.

No, but I would like to! We did have a place on the leelanau penisula, about halfway between leland and northport, on the lake. had to sell it when my Dad died. So sad, loved that place. Will be back soon! Did have the longhorn flag out there from time to time.
