Need Some Help....

Ok.
Here's the deal.
I used to have 4 truck drivers that I manage in the Fort Worth area. I now have 5.
When there were 4, two of the drivers had every other weekend off.
Well now with 5 it's a little tougher.

I'm trying to do this where they still have every other weekend off, and a man "on call."

So...........
Let's say we have

David, Craig, Jeff, Scott and Mike

David and Craig work the first weekend with Jeff on call.

Where do we go from here?

well you could do it a number of ways. here is one option:

Have 1 person be on call all month. He is not obligated to work a single weekend, but he is on call. Then the next month, someone else. For example:

January: Jeff is on call

d and c weekend 1 and 3
S and m weekend 2 and 4

February

avid on call

you get the picture. This would just allow each guy a month here and there to be on call.

You could also do this:
d and c weekend 1
J and s weekend 2
Mike and whoever wants to get fired the least weekend 3.

Then start over.

Ok, I think I have a system that will work:

Week 1: D & C with J on call
Week 2: S & M with D on call
Week 3: J & C with S on call
Week 4: M & D with C on call
Week 5: S & J with M on call
Week 6: D & C with J on call (and continue repeating)

I realize that the person "on call" may not have every other weekend off if he gets the call. But, this way each driver is scheduled to work 2 of every 5 weekends with the possibility of working a 3rd weekend. Also, in co case would a driver have to work and be "on call" 3 weekends in a row.

What if I don't use an on call and go with 3 and 2 (same group) with a volunteer...

It would be best not to go with the volunteer plan.

I would go with Shocking's scenario. Except let them swap on-call weekends if they want to - that way if somebody's kid has a birthday party or something, another guy can swap weekends with him. Don't make it inflexible, but if you ask them to volunteer, you'll end up with 2 guys volunteering and 3 guys not, or you will end up with a weekend with nobody volunteering, and then you have to piss someone off.

Since they are used to having every other weekend off...
