So I had not shaved in 5 days prior to this morning. I've never go more than two without shaving (except when I grew a full beard). When I shaved this morning, I butchered my face. Is there some secret to shaving a thick 5 day beard? Wasn't long enough to trim with a clipper first. The worst part is now I will have all these little cuts to contend with when I shave each of the next 3-5 days. Should I have gone to a barber? Oh wait... It's Monday!

Should have buzzed it as much as possible with clippers with no guard - even if you didn't think it was long enough to trim.

Also, do it either in the shower or right after the sower.

Finally, stop bleeding.

The short answer is: shave with MUCH shorter strokes than usual. Whatever you usually do, cut that in half, at least. And change blades 1/2 way through.

For the cuts/nicks, go get a styptic pencil. Should be able to find 'em at any drugstore.

I regularly go 5 days without shaving. I just make sure to use a brand new razor and soften the whiskers up with lots of hot water first.

Get a DE razor, a packet of Feather High Blades, badger hair shave brush, and some DE Harris shave cream or soap.

Should have gone with a new blade and the shorter strokes. I think the blade was clogging. Took a huge chunk out of my chin. In fact, all of the cuts were really more like chunks. Never do that again.

Softening up the whiskers is a must. I'd take a shower first and then shave.

Second, the shorter strokes is a must as well.

If I go too long without shaving (5 days is WAY too long), I can't shave with a razor.

In that situation, I use a set of clippers with no guard first before using a blade. You'd be surprised at how short the clippers can get it. I can get to the equivalent of 2 days growth with clippers.
