I have changed my business somewhat in that I am now going to be buying estate jewelry. I had a friend build this site for me and I was going to ask y'all what changes you think I should make. Thanks in advance.

-there is no address given because for security reasons, I want to talk to everyone and make an appointment rather than just having them show up.

A picture of you in a dress would be a nice, personal touch.

My criticisms at first glance:

1. There is a lot of of blank white space.
2. The text on the purple bars is hard to read.

The site itself is very basic, but I prefer that. There is a little too much open space, though. It's serving as a first point of contact, so you don't need it to be too flashy or anything. I have some recommendations for the copy, just to clean it up a bit and make it sound more professional. I've quoted each line of copy, and added my suggested revisions underneath.

There's nothing wrong with a clean simple site. The criticsm of the text on purple background is valid. Also, if it were me, I would put all the content in a smaller table that is centered on the page. This allows you to use a color for the background, which would essentially frame the content, limiting the whitespace.

Yeah, but I don't want to sound that way.

BTW, I helped you despite you mocking my plastic guitar. Kudos to goofy. I'm like Jesus with my cheek-turning ability.

Here's another vote for too much white space.

Maybe a picture of your place of business (if that's possible) or even some generic pictures of jewelry might help fill some space.

If you have a mission statement for your business, that could go somewhere on the home page.

Boring, cliche suggestions but there you have it.

I'd get rid of the 'mailto' link on the contact page. That email address will be relentlessly spammed if left as is. You can replace it with a form: your client enters their message into the form & the contents are sent to an email address or a database. You can also have a gif or jpeg made of your email address - web spiders don't read those.

Also, put in a bunch of meta tags like "goatsex" -- you'll get more calls from the college station area that way.

Put in tags like "clown sex," and you'll getmore hits from Hayden.

I think the amount of white space is right. Looks like it fits well on smaller as well as larger displays. I'd lose the never-ending purple bars, though, and make a finite edge. (I would use stylesheets and div tags for positioning and sizing rather than tables, but that's just me.)

And a suggestion, add more specific 'Blvd' or 'Highway' or whatever it is to the "Far West and Mopac."

Mambo

Consider this new php software. It's very easy to set up and run and they have some very sleek, professional templates....oh yea, the software is free some templates will cost a few dollars.

Add some fake customer testimonials.

I would drop the explantion of where the gems go after you buy them. Why does that matter? Right or wrong, when I read your explanation, the first thing that goes through my mind is that I might get more money selling my jewelry directly to a jewler.

Instead, emphasize that your service is FAST and painless. All that matters is that you are standing by with hard cold cash to buy their jewelry. You want your potential customer to envision grandma's jewelry box filled with cash instead of old jewelry.

ok, I wont make fun of your plastic guitar... thanks, though.

a) I dont really want to conduct business on the internet, so to speak. I basically want people to be able to log onto the website get some very basic info, and call or email me. The last thing I want is some guy faxing me an appriasal or emailing me a scan of it and asking me what it's worth. 90% of the time, an appriasal will not give me the info I need. Most of them, unless they have certificates for the diamonds, are wrong anyway.
b) I dont want ot have pics of jewelry. It will make people think I HAVE that jewelry. This will either make them want to buy it, and I can not sell it to them, or rob me, and I'll have to shoot them. Both annoying ways to spend an afternoon.
c) I am austin's premier buyer because no one else really does it. There are a ton of stores who buy diamonds from people, but most of them offer basically half wholesale. Not only that, but they dont know colored stones or period pieces well enough to buy them. No one else would offer $5000 for a Ruby. Basically, I will offer closer to the actual value of the estate than anyone else. For example, a lady came in on Thursday with three rings. I gave her $4500 and some clown had offered her $3000. People really try to screw you when you sell jewelry.
d) The jewelry stores offer less than me, not to mention, at this point, a lot of stores in Austin will be handing my cards to people selling jewelry as they dont want to deal with them.
anything else?

You should point out that within a couple of years, the proliferation of synthetic diamonds will all but render natural diamonds worthless, so if you have any natural diamonds you're thinking about selling, do it now!
