Need Networking Help

Okay, I need help from some of you network savvy folks (or anyone who knows more than me, which is just about everyone over 8 years of age). I have a D-Link DIR-655 Wireless N router and it drops the internet fairly often. My laptop (a Dell with the N card) doesn't lose connection with the router, but it loses the internet connection (as does my PS3 and my Directv HD DVR tuner). I can usually get the inernet connection on my laptop right back by logging off the network and reconnecting.

My question is this, is it a router issue or is their a modem issue or is there a modem/router compatibility issue? I have updated the firmware on all network devices and it has not helped with issue.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I think that is the one I originally bought and it sucked. Telephone support could not solve the problem and I think I even tried a replacement. My problem was compatibility with Windows Vista.

Return it ASAP and get this one:The Link

I have had absolutely no problems with it.

I don't really have any suggestions; however, does that netgear router really work all throughout the house? I have difficulties on the far side of the house/living room/bedroom and I would love to have a stronger signal.

My guess is that you have another device on the same frequency like a cordless phone. Is that possible? Does it only cut out when the cordless phone rings or your TIVO connects to your computer with a wireless USB, etc. I try to avoid having anything on the same frequency as my wireless router.

I have an Apple Extreme router (N compatible) and it's always worked perfectly, even in the presence of interfering wireless phones. Even if there is another device at the same frequency a good router will adapt, but maybe not the D-Link. If you have a 2.4GHz phone it might be the source of the interference for the D-Link. DECT 6.0 phones use a different frequency and are preferred if you want a wireless LAN and wireless phone to coexist optimally. Or your microwave oven might be too leaky.

Thanks for the replies. I have recently bought DECT 6.0 phones and still have the issue, but it might be less frequent...too soon to tell.

The Directv DVR is on an ethernet bridge and the signal drops out on all three (laptop, PS3 and DVR) at the same time. One thing I haven't tried to see if my desktop (wired connection) is still connected when the router loses connection. I guess that would tell me if it is a modem issue (old Bitstream/Speedstream DSL) and I should probably check for firmware updates on the modem anyway.

Again, thanks for the input.
