Need MS Word help

I have a merge document that I'm trying to add some programing to. Basically I want to use and IF THEN statement but the problem is the field I'm using in the IF THEN. It's a field with several characters in it and want to read if at least one is a certain value. Well the IF THEN isn't doing that. It's reading the field as one value not several values within one field. Can this be done in word? Any help or direction in where to look would be appreciated.
