So I use yahoo mail.

The problem is without an internet connection, old messages cannot be recalled and read.

So, for 15 bucks a year or so, you can upgrade from the free yahoo to a "pop" type, which can be used via such programs as outlook. As I understand this, it means that I can refer to mails and write responses (to be sent later) when there is no internet connection available, such as on a plane.

However, I don't have outlook, and I don't really want to fork over the cash to get it.

Are there any free/cheaper alternatives that act like outlook and accomplish what I need to do?

Great Dan. Any preference on those three???

If I use outlook express will that make my life easier should I ever upgrade to outlook?

Of the three, I use Eudora. But a lot of that is loyalty dating back to my first semester at UT. I haven't upgraded it in years, but it still does everything I need from it.

Outlook Express does have a clean upgrade path to Outlook, and it's likely already installed on your computer.

All that being said, if I was starting for the first time I would try Thunderbird. I think it has the best future as a standalone product.
