need a Dallas restaurant recommendation

I need a recommendation for a good place to eat that is either in Downtown Dallas, or is walkable from a train station.

Nothing too ridiculous price-wise.

I dunno, I'm pretty open.

This is our anniversary. We're staying in a hotel downtown.

But we don't exactly have the budget for some of the really high end Dallas restaurants. And as we're both teachers and have never even set foot inside a place that nice, I don't even know if we would know how to eat at a place like that. Reading reviews on some of these places sort of intimidates me.

But I do want something nice, even if it isn't a "come to be seen and show off" kind of place.

We like Italian, steakhouses, tex-mex, American, home style food. We do not like seafood or Asian food.

what hotel are you at just to get a feel for location?

plus....you have a car? or going to want to walk/short cab ride.

Think about going to Stephen Pyle's at eating at the tapas bar. We do that when we want nice food, without the price or fuss of sitting in the main restaurant and ordering off the menu. You get to hang out in a cool place and it will feel a bit celebratory. The flatbread pizzas are awesome and are $12. The other tapas are all in the $8-10 range. Get a pizza and 2-3 other small plates and have a nice glass of wine and you can get out for under $70.

If you happen to be doing this Saturday, the 4th, walk down to the Nasher. It is one of their Saturday Nights in the City. It's beautiful in there at night and you don't get to do it very often. Be sure to check out the concrete room in the back, with the opening to the sky. Nasher + Stephen Pyles = nice date night.

we will have our car with us, but I was hoping to not have to deal with it.

We'll be at the Westin City Center downtown.

And yes, this is Saturday the 4th.

that Nasher thing sounds cool, and I looked it up and there is a Beatles tribute band playing that night. That could be fun.

650 North....blah....there are many great places within 2-3 miles of the hotel.

I am trying to think of great places that wont bust the bank and have come up with a few. Dallas peeps may or may not agree but i am thinking plates more in the 10-15 range that wont kill ya. Taverna in the Knox/Henderson area is one of my favs and is a quant little Italian restaurant that would be fun for an anniversary. Just up 75 from where you are staying. Keep in mind dealing with a car in Dallas is a piece of cake. Also in the Italian type there is Patrizios in Highland Park, that also shocks me when i get the bill how good it is and how cheap considering. For the $$$$ and the ambiance those are the best ideas i could come up with. Even with booze i dont see you walking out dropping more that 65 bucks.

Here are my suggestions:

The Palm (West End) Really good food. Moderately priced. Expect about $20 per entree. Definately my recommendation if you want to go sans car as the train stops a block away.

Antares (Reunion Tower) Food is good, but the allure is even better. Unless you are afraid of heights, it doesn't get much better than dining to a panoramic view of Dallas. You will need a reservation though. Prices are moderate.

YO Ranch Steakhouse (Near West end) Great food, but a little pricier. Probably one of the better decorums in the area.

Fuse (Downtown) Excellent sushi and Asian cuisine. But, expect to pay $25 per person. EDIT: Sorry, didn't read the no asian.

Fuel City (Outskirts of downtown) See what all the fuss is about. A meal will cost you $8 for 2 people

Quite honestly, I would venture out to uptown if you want the most bang for your buck. Entrees at most places are roughly $15-$20 and they aren't so much of a tourist trap. Cubre Libre is a great choice.

Another option, if you want it to be more casual, is to eat in Deep Ellum. There are great casual dining options there. (Monica's, Angry Dog, Daddy Jack's, Sol's Taco Lounge, Adair's, etc.) All are roughly $10 or less for an entree. But, if you are going on a Saturday, you need to go early as the streets get blocked off for the nightlife.

I will be at the Nasher on Saturday night. I'm a fan of A Hard Night's Day. I'm friends with some of the guys in the band. They put on a fantastic show. You should definitely check it out after dinner. The Nasher Sculpture Garden alone is bad ***, but throw in live Beatles music, hundreds and hundreds of people, and the downtown lights, and it will be very awesome.

Stephan Pyles is worth breaking the bank for. You can walk there from your hotel and it's right next to the Nasher.

Or you can walk over and catch the McKinney Avenue Trolley at the Dallas Arts Museum at Ross & St. Paul (a few blocks from your hotel), and ride it for FREE to any one of dozens of reasonably priced restaurants in Uptown (Sambuca, Grotto, 2900, Arcadoro/Pomadoro, TABC, State & Allen Lounge, S& D Oyster, Dream Cafe, Breadwinner's, Primo's), or as far north as West Village (Ferre, Mi Cocina, Taco Diner). It's always fun to take the trolley. Then take it back to go to the Nasher.
