actually jsut need recommendations from gamers on which ones satisfied them

My 500 lb 21 " crt finally died so i'm in the market (yay).

I've read the pertinent literature and udnerstand all the terms/specs so just tell me the one you liked and why

You've got time to game as well as bang coke whores? You da man! I have no input on the monitor, but generally the most expensive anything is the best. Including coke whores.

With LCD monitors and serious gaming, it's all about reaction time. The standard should be 16ms, but 12ms is better. The problem is that, generally speaking, larger monitors have slower reaction times. There are a few 16ms models in the 20.1" range (viewsonic and iiyama), but if you want 12ms, you are currently limited to 17" (based on a quick search of what newegg currently carries; you may find something better doing a more exhaustive search).

I recently switched from a 19" CRT to a 17" LCD, and the difference in actual viewable real estate was minimal. Thus, you may be able to live with less monitor than you think. Go look at a few in person.

The other issue to consider is native resolution. An LCD picture looks best when it's configured with the resolution for which it was designed. In my case, it's 1280x1024. This took a bit of an adjustment, as I was accustomed to 1024x768, but I wasn't willing to live with the picture degradation to run at that level. I know your system can handle it, but if your games don't support higher resolutions, you may be disappointed with how they look. I'd expect 1600x1200 as the norm for your target display.

Other than that, when comparison shopping, pay attention to brightness, contrast ratio, pixel pitch, and view angle. Most LCDs have built-in speakers, but they'll likely go unused, so don't use that in your criteria.

dude thankss for typign that but I know all that

I just want specific brand recs from people who have used them.

It is not exactly 20 inches but I got the 19 inch Sony LCD monitor and have been very happy with it. The only game I play on it is Americas Army but it seems to do ok. I paid something like $580 over the net.

cool, i really want a 20 for 1200*1600 native but they are expensive so i don't want to "roll the dice"

This guy can help you out, you just have to "trust" him.
The Link

Viewsonic and Samsung is the way to go, unless you've got the jack for Sony (which you probably do).

agreed, viewsonic (and samsung) visual is pretty good, was shopping around a couple weeks ago to replace monitors at work (best buy, fry's, conns, etc.) and for price pretty good product

BTW Raizer, is that guy legit? sounds waaayyyy tooo goood to be true (and that usually means it is)

uhh, I wouldn't know if he's legit or not b/c there's no way in hell I'd send cash to a guy I didn't know like that. take it for what it is....too good to be true. I was just joking about using him.

idigTexas - that's actually bad advice. "Response time" means very little. It's like megapixels on digital cameras - it's another one of those dumbass, nearly meaningless and almost always totally misleading specs. As with resolution on digital cameras, response time on LCDs is a relatively complex issue. Apparently contrast ratio numbers are usually cooked to boot.

Thanks for the info. I read Tom's site somewhat regularly, but I hadn't seen that particular article. "Bad advice" is a bit harsh, but you make some valid points. It is always a good idea to read Tom's and other similar sites before making a major computer hardware purchase. I still believe that comparing spec is useful, but you are right in that it is a bad idea to limit your evaluation to just that.

Besides footprint and cool looks, there's another very good reason to go with an LCD - portability. Many gamers regularly do the LAN party thing, and toting a CRT can be a royal pain. This in fact was the primary reason I bought mine.

Sorry about that. It came across as much more harsh than I intended. Thanks for pointing that out (not sarcastic -- it my tone is a bit abrasive, I do need to watch it).

I'm about to be buying a new computer, will be used for mostly internet, but for some games (super excited about the Pirates! remake) but I would like to read a little more, what is Tom's and where is the website?

Thanks
