nebraska's temperament

Most around us were good. There was more whining about officiating than I heard in 2002, and I saw some upside down logos and horns down. But they were mostly friendly and very nice, and a lot told me to drive safely on the way out.

Most of the fans also critiqued those booing during the injury.

This is a double post, but I wasn't sure how to link:

I was sitting in the Horns section of the endzone on the media side, and the fans weren't great, at least the ones near me. Lots of grumbling, whining, booing, etc. (sure was happy when the whistle in your ear guy gave up in defeated silence early in the 4th quarter)

I have to say, though, with the exception of a few really plastered huskers that were trying to provoke an angry altercation or two , the post game fans were almost embarrassingly nice. At Barry's afterward, where we were until 10-ish, I had probably 50 congrats, high-fives, "aw-shucks you guys are great" type of comments. It was almost like they wanted to _be_ Texas fans. Even the girls. Actually, especially the girls, in particular the dirty-dancing ones…

"Critiqued" those booing, like, "I thought that boo was much heartier than your average boo."

Back to the original question, I thought their behavior was better than in '06, which wasn't really that bad to begin with. Noone got up in my face this time around, spitting while they screamed. However, there were almost as many anti-Texas tshirts as there were pro-Nebraska tshirts. There were more Horns down than in '06, and many more than in '02 (we didn't go in '08).

I heard some mild jawing on the way to the stadium, but it was much more subdued after the game. While we were passing a group of college kids, one guy started yelling to me, "Hey, Texas! Hook 'em! Hey Texas, I'm talking to you... *******!" I thought that was funny because I knew he was up to something, and I'm old enough not to take the bait. It sounded too rehearsed, like he'd been doing that to Texas fans all day.

We had a couple people ask if we were being treated well, and they were happy to hear that anything negative was pretty tame.

I had an older NU fan ask me at a gas station in Columbus if we need directions to Lincoln. He thought we had driven up from Texas and missed the turn off to Lincoln.

All-in-all, it this is as bad as they get, they're pretty good folks. Enough of them avoided eye contact that it was pretty obvious they don't like us.

There were 3 middle aged Texas guys in Section 19, middle of Row 88 (?) who were being a bit assholish before the game. They were talking lots of smack, thinking they were funny. Smack is like comedy, it's hard and if you don't do it right, nobody laughs.

One more thing. I listened to the post game show on the radio in it's entirety. The NU coaches weren't whining, but when they got to the open lines for the fans, there were corks being pulled all over the place. Probably 80% of the callers had to throw in crap about the calls. Occasionally, the radio hosts intervened and poo pooed particular complaints, but it was typical Nebraska, I'm sorry to say.

I have never heard CU fans boo an injury in the last 5 years, and I have season tickets, so Im not really sure what you're talking about SN. Is there a particular moment, or is this all speculation?

Nebraska fans are some of the best officials complainers when they lose. All the way back to '98 it is a constant complain, complain, complain about the officials.

They have taught me how horrible it looks to complain about officials. You have to play better, do what it takes to win. Then the calls don't matter.

I didn't make the trip and not sure how many times NU fans booed
while a Longhorn was down, but late in the game it was obvious they were not
booing because he was hurt but rather because they thought he was faking his
injury to slow down NU's hurry up.
My take anyway.

We went to a great tailgate and the fans were awesome. Of course at the time they thought they had our asses strung up already....they honestly looked and acted like us before the UCLA game.

They were polite and loved to talk football...and the food and drink were plentiful.

During the game there was some tension/nervousness/fright in the air after we took the 10-0 lead. Only a couple fans (I was in the middle of a sea of red, probably like most of us) were looking to say something to me. The older gent in front was a little hot, but he knew I was not there to cause an issue and he soon settled. When I stood up after our next score, the young woman behind me sitting between her parents said "sit your *** down." I was stunned at her comments....right in front of her parents.

I just looked at her and smiled and did not stop smiling. It pissed her off so much she left the game and never came back.

Kill 'em with kindness!

And then we had to go to Misty's (steak place...good) and tell the young hostess we were "Muschamp...party of 4." It was classic when she announced it on the PA.

Good times. Good fans up there for the most part. Always a bad apple somewhere.

That's much better than me telling our hostess that we were, "Tex... party of 4." Sorry, that's the best I could do at the dorp of a hat.

We had a great time with the Nebraska fans. Drank, ate and talked football at length with husker fans prior to the game.. We recieved numerous "great game"and "good luck with the rest of the season" salutes after the game. They were despondent but we did not encounter any rudeness after the game. We warned them about Ohio State experiences and they were shaking their heads but were very happy about the move to the Big 10.
Great fans.

My 11 year old daughter caught this one on the screen.

(I had to watch a second time)

Of course, not representative of the whole.

This is my fourth time to Lincoln and it has certainly become more frosty over the years. There were snide comments throughout the weekend (Diner on Cornhusker highway) “Look at what the f*ck just walked in” and the old man at Sidetracks who go up in my grill when I asked of he could take half a step forward after he backed into our group.

But make no mistake about it – they were completely devastated – maybe more than I have ever seen another fanbase (previous high might be A&M 1995). Shocked, pissed, demoralized, despondent – you call it, they wore as they could NOT believe what Texas did to that team.

And they absolutely deserved it as I have NEVER enjoyed watching opposing fans eat as much crow as this game.

And here is why:

They insist on playing the victim blaming Texas for leaving the Big XII. And I head it over and over and over again.

Man at Misty’s just going off: “They have the refs in their back pocket! The commissioner in their back pocket.” And on and on and on.

People complaining about the rev-share agreement in the Big XII (that they voted for and directly benefited from).

Complaining about partial qualifiers that have since been outlawed by the NCAA and never accepted by the Big 10.

In the entire two days in Lincoln, I had only ONE guy who was honest about it – “It’s about the money.” BINGO.

And yet, claiming that it is just about the money conflicts with their myopic world view that they are the “Greatest College Football Fan on Earth” as it would be too seemly. So they need someone to blame and that would be Texas.

Final point: We are at Sidetracks and the Sidetracks Band (who has the BEST ********) starts on this 20 minute rip on Oklahoma – songs, extended jokes, etc. So I told the guy “This is what you are going to miss – the 100 years of history with the Big 8 – the ingrained hatred of Oklahoma and Texas. In the Big 10 – you are someone’s third most important game.” Guy took a slow draw and just said “That’s the risk.”

This was my first (and probably last) trip to Lincoln. We had an INCREDIBLE time. Anything negative that happened was too tame to report and can be chalked up to "there's always a few ******** in every group". We were invited to a Texas tailgate that happened to be sharing a lot with a large Nebraska tailgate. Our two tailgates combined and where sharing food, drinks and laughs.

I have never been congratulated so much on a win by opposing fans. To do think that some only do it because they feel they have to as NU fans but others felt very genuine in their remarks.

From my experience this weekend, I think the Big 12 will miss Nebraska fans. I may not have traveled to as many games as most of you, but they were by far the most cordial group of fans I've been around.

I'm glad the College World Series is still in Omaha (saw the new stadium on the way back to the airport). I haven't made it up there for that yet but I look forward to seeing some baseball with those same fans.

Great fans- very few negative comments. Most were positive and high fives. Great fans- but only got to be around mostly older folks- at the "O" street bars - even the younger ones were friendly- curious about us and cam up to our table and asked questions etc. A fantastic time overall. Sad- that will be the last time we will be up there.
Hook'em

there was a normal mix of fans. the alumni were painfully nice for the most part. their students were just as obnoxious as everyone else's students, though. i actually got punched by a female student as we were leaving the game....can't say that has ever happened. and we had more than a few students yelling "f*** texas" at us as we left, too. if it weren't for the booing our injured player, i might actually say they were good fans overall, but that was ridiculous.

Experience was great. Invited to share in their tailgate grub. Numerous congrats following the game. A few curse words here and there but nothing too bad. Our longhorn flag flying was turned upside down overnight but that's as bad as it got. Pretty tame. In regards to fans booing a player down, it was because they thought he was faking. If you remember, most of the injuries happened during nebraskas drives. Fans felt we were killing the momentum. Also on that last injury, our player got up and was walking off the field and then took a knee. I'm sure we would've interpreted the same way.

It seems the Nebraska fans felt our "faked" injuries were hindering their offense (yes the one that gained a whopping 202 yards) in much the same way Sherman feels TV timeouts hinder his Aggies.
