Nebraska - Texas 1998

At the end of this game the Nebraska fans stood up and applauded Ricky Williams for his heisman performance. This Saturday we may again see a heisman performace from Robert Griffin. If so let's show the country what great fans UT has.

Big differences between the NU game and the upcoming BU game.

1. NU was riding the nation's longest home win streak at 47 --- again, the game was at Lincoln and Ricky did his thing on their turf. Saturday's game is a home game for RGIII and I don't think BU is anywhere close to a 47-home game win streak, or I guess for a parallel Texas is nowhere close to a 47-game away win streak.

2. NU had won the MNC in 1997 (split with Meatchicken), and while lost earlier in 1998 to aggy, was still considered among the best teams in the country. Ricky ran over and around them. Uh, even if RGIII puts up 400 yards passing and 150 yards running, UT's 2011 team ain't NU's 1998 --- though our defense IS pretty salty, still not at NU's 1998 level, IMHO.

3. Texas was unranked. NU was #7. This year going into the BU game, BCS has BU at around 17 and Texas around 22. Kind of even ranking.

4. RGIII is good; but he hasn't had the impact on the Big 12 or college football that Ricky did (Ricky broke the all-time 20-year old or so rushing record, passing Dorsett, surpassed the next year by Dayne).

While I think RGIII is a good kid and wish he had played for Texas and has put up some Heisman-like efforts this year, for him to win it he'd have to really light up Texas' defense, AND BU would probably have to win --- neither circumstance I'd like to see.

But this game isn't shaping up as a platform for the ages. No streaks to break, at home, no big stage.

Okay, stand and applaud if you like; I'm not being a poor sport, but

GREAT GAME
Texas 20, #7 Nebraska 16
Saturday, October 31, 1998
Memorial Stadium/Tom Osborne Field (Lincoln, Neb.)
Texas faced a daunting task in playing their third Top 10 opponent of the season and facing Nebraska's national-leading 47-game home winning streak. However, on the back of their future Heisman Trophy winning running back, the arm of their redshirt freshman quarterback and the heels of their top defensive effort of the year, the Longhorns took a major step toward respectability in a stunning 20-16 upset of No. 7 Nebraska in Lincoln. "The key thing that we did was come in here to win the ballgame," Ricky Williams said. "We didn't come to get a moral victory or to play a good game. We came to win and we believed that we would win. That's the reason we beat them." UT pulled a rare feat in Lincoln, jumping out to a 7-0 lead on its first possession and controlling the game with a 10-3 halftime lead. The Huskers responded by claiming a 13-10 lead in the third quarter, but the Longhorns didn't crater. On the UT's first possession of the final period and facing a third-and-10 play from its own 19-yard-line, Major Applewhite connected with little-used WR Bryan White on a 76-yard pass play. The throw set up Kris Stockton's 19-yard field goal that knotted the game at 13. Nebraska claimed a 16-13 advantage with 8:33 remaining in the game. Facing one of the nation's top defenses, Texas took over at its own 15-yard-line and White again made the big play. On third-and-21 from the UT 35-yard-line, White skirted the sidelines in catching a 37-yard pass that gave the Longhorns a first-and-10 at the Huskers 28. Williams rushed five consecutive times to move the ball to the Nebraska 2-yard-line, where on third-and-goal, Applewhite found Wane McGarity working his way back across the end zone on a 2-yard TD pass with 2:47 remaining. The play was tabbed the College Football Play of the Week. The game served as a significant mark in Ricky Williams run for the Heisman Trophy as he rushed 37 times for 150 yards against Nebraska's vaunted "Black Shirt" defense, which entered the game ranked 17th nationally (106.5 ypg) against the run. Applewhite completed 14-of-26 passes for 269 yards and two TDs, but possibly the most surprising effort came from the Longhorns defense, which behind a 13-tackle, two-sack, five TFLs effort from LB Anthony Hicks held Nebraska to 311 yards of offense, more than 100 yards below its season average (412.5 ypg).

I for one hope Texas donkey stomps RGIII's heisman hopes and Baylor and then gives him a standing ovation at the end for beating OU.

Er, but it's at Waco. No DKR.

I mean, I'm going to the game regardless. But isn't it more important for you to be urging baylor fans to give him an ovation than Texas fans?

When you consider all the negative publicity UT has gotten lately do to the LHN this is a way to cast us in a positive light. We are a Class Act, we are Texas.

RGB III plays for this weekend's enemy. ENEMY. I wish nothing but loss and pain for that sorry %&*&^!

After the game, I will resume really liking the kid and root for his continued health and success.

I like the word CLASS....when it is shown, when it is written about you....

I do not like the word CLASS when that is the way you describe yourself....that is NOT classy.

...just say'n....

When one walks around with a superior attitude the whole world is out to bring him down. Let's cast Texas in a positive light.

Don't worry, I'm going and I'm going to be wearing my burnt orange thong and painting my bare chest with Bevo, nothing shows Texas in a more positive light.

Apparantly, you forgot how classy the Nebraska fans were in 2010.

I hope we destroy Baylor as payback for our home loss last year. If he wanted a Heisman, he should have earned it during the a&m game.
