NCAA Pimping African American athletes..

I personally love the baseball rule. Go pro, or you're in college for three years (although that could get tricky for football).

Of course the entire process is hypocritical, but too many people are making money to mess with it.

I have always been in favor of paying athletes a living stipend like graduate students. Keeps them clothed, fed, and focused. They quit their sport, they can stick to their scholarship, but have to pay for living expenses like their peers.

If you are going to restrict a student-athlete from working then compensation should be made in the form of a stipend beyond the scholarship. The crap about them not being responsible for academic work is quite possibly the stupidest thing I have seen someone write and print.

i agree with him, the NCAA is a bureaucratic nightmare, much like our government agencies, it is a piece of crap. they are more concerned ith their power and keeping the staus quo than changing for the better.

THe biggest thing that keeps college football and basketball players from being paid is Title IX. Men's basketball and football produce enough revenue to pay those athletes a stipend. Of course, if you pay those athletes, you'd have to pay all atheletes.

His idea about 'form an alliance with the NBA and NFL' is ******* ridiculous. What motivation do the pro leagues have to give up the NCAA-as-free-minor-leagues gravy train?

Red Grange packed stadiums in the 20s playing for Illinois, and word is he never saw a classroom; nobody gave a **** about that. However, let a bunch of inked-up black guys loose on college campuses on athletic scholarship and people (on both sides of the fence) get their ******* panties in a wad....

How many world-class swimmers have come to UT 'for an education' for 1-2 years just to train for the Olympics? Why do you never hear whining about how they're being exploited?

So wait. Some kids don't want to put in the time it takes to get an education so we should pay them with our tax dollars (at least at state universities) to have a shot at the NFL and NBA? Um, I don't know about anyone else but I have a problem with that.

Having just graduated and spending my time in college as a four year athlete I believe I have a vested opinion in this matter. I played football for a small university with pretty tough academics and I think it is absurd for college athletes to be paid. Especially at Div.1 schools.

What ever happened to the thought process that a scholarship, a FREE education, room and board and a meal plan were more than generous? The problem is not the fact that the university uses players to make money because it does that with all students (i.e. tuition, books, meal plans, room/board, free research, free internships, ECT...). The problem is the fact that the student athlete and the fans, for the most part, have forgotten what it means to be a student athlete. Like mentioned in the article athletes have become entertainer-athletes. This is the fault of both fan base and the athletes themselves.

Feeling entitled to being treated like a superstar should never be on the athletes' mind. They should consider it an amazing opportunity to be receiving a free education and preparing themselves for life ahead, no matter what that should be.

I know we can't change the mindset of the entire fan base or all the incoming student athletes but that doesn't mean we should give in to this crooked way of thinking by paying them.

At my school during football season we would be doing football damn near 40hrs a week every week from approx. Aug.10 until the second weekend in Nov, and that’s because we lost in the playoffs then. My team went 35-7 over four years and we have 3 conference championship rings to show for it. More importantly our team maintained a team GPA over 3.0 every fall semester. And we don't get athletic scholarships.

My point is athletes should take advantage of the school as much as the school is taking advantage of them through the avenues created when they sign their LOI, education.

I probably left some things out but my fingers are spent....

Why are we wasting bandwidth over this idoit? It's like complaining about Skip Bayless. Water is wet. Whitlock is a tool.
