NCAA Men's Tourney goes to 68 teams and...

CBS and Turner have won the rights to televise the NCAA March Madness Tournament. Of course this will be reviewed by the NCAA Board of Directors or such on April 29th, but it looks like the 96 team scenario may be dead for quite awhile.

ESPN's story

Going to 68 has seemed like a no brainer ever since they added the first play in game. Good to see the NCAA didnt completely destroy the tourny by going to 96 that would have made the regular season and conference tourneys a total waste of everyone's time.

I really like that every game will now be available without having to get a satellite.

I don't know why they don't just go ahead, make it 96 or something, and do away with the conference tourneys. I think that's a decent compromise.

Maybe even shorten the regular season; limit the regular season to 25 games, something like that, get in to the tourney in mid Feb., right after the Super Bowl.

I really like that idea. 18-7 would get you in the tourney easily. Maybe even something as bad as 15-10 gets you in the tourney.

Get rid of the NIT.

another more extreme example would be to have 128 teams, you would need even fewer regular season games. Cut down to 20 games, start the tourney in early February, still have plenty of excitement. in March.

So...let me get this straight...you think they should do away with ten regular season/CT games, in order to add one to the championship series...and be all wrapped up by the first weekend in March?

well, I guess now that you put it that way, you wouldn't even have to get rid of 10 regular season games, would you? Definitely get rid of the conference tourneys, maybe cut regular season back by a weeks worth of games, 2-3.

would anybody complain about losing the conference tourneys? nope, just the bean counters, and there would be umpteen more beans if the tourney gets bigger.

2-3 games, 5 games, whatever, cutting a few games isn't gonna hurt anybody. Just makes the last few games more relevant.

Good, 4 more teams with no chance at getting past the 1st weekend all in the name of money. The NCAA is slowly opening the can of worms to a tournament that becomes watered down and too long. In the next 5yrs it'll be at 96 and a piss poor event, but when money becomes more important than the product, we as fans lose.

$10.8 billion for basketball?

Can you imagine the TV deal for football if they had a tournament?
