NCAA investigating Baylor

The story linked by the OP doesn't show the weirdness going on. A Baylor assistant is alleged to have sent several text messages to Hanner Perea's HS coach in Indiana. Hanner Perea is a Colombian national who came to the US last year and enrolled in high school.

OK, so it's texting high school and AAU coaches during a period in which text messages aren't allowed. BFD, right?

Well, one of the texts reads as follows:

"I guarantee u if he does [commit to another school] he will be in Colombia for the spring and summer and next year. Don’t forget it.”

The Link

Edit: Perea was actually playing for a North Carolina school last year, United Faith Christian Academy. He transferred to LaLumiere High this summer. He came to the US through the A-HOPE program

Hmm......The only thing that I'm surprised about is that THIS is what the NCAA is investigating. The quote is along the same lines as the threat I posted on here in the spring, from Drew to a HS coach.

How stupid do you have to be to send something like that in a text? Idiot!!

"Multiple people told the website that Baylor assistant coach Mark Morefield sent dozens of texts to Perea's AAU and high school coaches in July while they were at coaching events, which is against NCAA rules."

Coaches can't text during certain times of the year. So yes, it's illegal. The same thing Bruce Pearl got in trouble for. And basically Kelvin Sampson too.

They were talking on the ticket out of waco today to a basketball guru. I apologize didnt catch his name but the question they asked was this investigation due to the fact that they are now beating Texas..
wtf.gif
They quy replied he was not priviliged to inside information and didn't know where this came from.

Not so much just beating Texas, but I think if you look at their rise in success, it's not unusual to come to conclusions like this.

And this is what that whole August thread was about. First it was the Baylor fans stating how no one else wanted their players, then that was debunked. Then it was that Scott Drew just "works harder" to get them. I think we're finally seeing some evidence of how he's working harder, which shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone (including Baylor fans).

(ESPECIALLY Baylor fans)

Baylor fans are fond of the "If BU beats Texas, we must be cheating" line, said with a knowing wink and a sarcastic voice. Bravo. A marvellous joke, to be sure.

But here's logic:

Baylor has disadvantages. Waco sucks. The team does not have a long, distinguished history of success and/or a rep for getting guys into the nba. They do have an up-and-coming coach, but not a huge name coach. They do not have the resources or fanbase to compete with TEXAS, ou, or even tamu.

Yet, Baylor's recruiting is off the charts. This is extraordinary. No one can deny it.

This recruiting success has a root cause; it doesn't just happen. There are a ton of bigtime basketball programs across the land (not just in our state & conference) trying like hell to get the kids Baylor is getting.

Why are they signing with BU?

The answer can be: (A) Baylor is doing a stupendous job selling these kids on the trajectory of the program and Coach Drew; (B) Baylor is using shady tactics, cutting corners, and running a few stopsigns, or (C) a combination.

It's possible Baylor is 100% squeaky clean, but is it really probable?

Really?

The problem is that there is a difference between "cutting a few corners" (cheating) and taking a corner at an excessive speed (grey area).

Even the text message issue with Baylor seems to be in a grey area. The NCAA rule that Baylor is being investigated under refers to not being able to contact a HS/AAU coach while that coach is coaching via "electronic voice communications." The Baylor coach sent a text message.

The negative recruiting issues and the hiring of Clifton present the same problem. Operating in the grey area but not a technical violation of any rule...

I had dinner with an old law school friend last night that was recruited to and played at a mid tier big east program. He played on an AAU team with a very prominent Big 12/NBA player. This specific topic came up. His view is that anybody who believes there is a single clean program in MBB is delusional.

This really isn't a grey area. The original report said the coach was already suspended by Baylor for texting infractions. link

you skipped Johnson in our coach lineage, the one who actually got charged with a felony because they faxed homework from the coaches office to a Juco in Fla.

we got probation, coaches get felony charges and OSU got the nations leading rebounder. it worked out well - ha

the infractions in this case, if there are any, are very grey. the coach texted an aau/high school coach, not the player. there is not dead period for this contact unless the coach is coaching an event. apparently, these coaches, who are trying hard to steer the kid to IU, reported some of the texts occurred while they were coaching "an event". this type of secondary violation is failry common and is often self-reported by programs because they aren't always aware what a aau coach is doing.

this is NOTHING like what Sampson or Pearl got busted for. Pearl had recruits and their families come to his house during dead period. that is a bit different.

I hate when people try to justify cheating. Stop crying and just accept the penalty, if there is one. If UT ever gets in trouble for cheating you won't find me on here talking about what everyone else is doing. I'd be upset that we had been cheating, and then realize that we deserve whatever we get.

The difference between what your friend described and BU is that the coaches are aware, and are active participants, while carrying the Bible around and trying to act Holy. It's sickening.

I'll answer for 3ball:

1. The original article said the coach in question was already suspended for improper texting.

2. Whether illegal or not, threatening a recruit that he'll be deported if he doesn't sign with your school is unethical & wrong.

Is there more? Who knows.

I don't see the texting thing as being that big of a deal, hence my "BFD" comment in my first post on the thread. It's a lose a scholarship for a year kind of thing at most, and probably not even worth that.

The bizarre thing is the threat conveyed that the player won't be in the US if he commits to another college. Such a threat is either just laughable as a lot of blustering crap or it raises some interesting questions. Does Baylor simply have such devotion from Perea's parents that they will remove him from the US as part of their parental oversight should Perea independently decide to go to another school? That would be pretty innocent. Is Baylor directly or indirectly providing the financial means by which Perea can stay in the US and making such provision on the promise of playing at Baylor? That has to be a violation. Is Baylor sitting on some information by which it can be determined that Perea is in the country illegally? That would be very troubling from an aspect of criminal law. Does Baylor have such control over someone in INS who is in a position to make a detemination on Perea's residency that such decision will be made solely on the benefit to Baylor basketball? That would be deeply disturbing on all sorts of levels. Does Ken Starr have a warehouse of blue dresses and is he ready to pull one under these circumstances in order to compel everyone (INS, US Attorneys, Perea family) to do his bidding? That would be utterly whack.

I'm guessing it was just an empty threat.

Thank you CBS, that is basically what I was talking about. For some reason when Baylor people read articles about negative stuff they don't come to the same conclusions as the rest of the world. I'd be pissed and extremely disappointed if this article was about Springmann, Terry, or Ogden.

I'd actually say it is very much like what Sampson got busted for, excessve phone calls, or excessive texting-both involve illicit contact. and like, Sampson, it has now happened multiple times for the Baylor program. I'd think unless Drew and company are able to silence a lot of recruits and their respective families, that something is going to be found out by the NCAA. Drew has been cheating, and now we all have proof.
