NBA Finals game 1

I was surprised by the defense the Lakers played in game 1. I don't recall them using that matchup zone/doubling in the playoffs. Obviously it didn't work and I am not sure it will unless Kobe plays much better on offense.

Gasol standing around not even trying to find someone to box out while Garnett soared for the monster putback with a couple of minutes left summed up the Lakers defensive rebounding pretty well.

Referring was ok, but I don't understand why they spend the first quarter letting everything go and by the 4th quarter, every tap resulted in FTs. The blocking call when Odom steamrolled PJ Brown was pretty ridiculous though - the NBA is never going to be justified in cutting down on flopping until they cut down on calls like that.

Stat has it right. Gasol's effort was pitiful the entire game.
Boston wanted that game more and got nearly all the loose balls.. I expect the Lakes to be fully prepared for game 2.

Oh yeah, and Pierce's acting job was Oscar worthy.

Overall very good game. You could see LA really trying to rotate guys in and out to find the best matchups.

LA obviously can't let Boston score 98 and expect to win. LA was about non existent from downtown, got solidly outrebounded, and got very little out of bench. Was a great game to watch.

I didn't think that was a bad call on PJ Brown. I thought he was leaning.

But Kobe was [Barkley] turible [/Barkley] last night. If he goes 9-26 every game, they don't have a chance.

Brown wasn't set and leaned. Hardly worthy of mention.

Celts rose up and the Lakes faded. Simple. When Pierce went down the Lakes followed up by missing 5-7 shots in a row, plus two FTs, which were all followed by poor transition D. They never recovered. The Celts got some timely shooting and the Lakes didn't.

Gasol is going to have to step up a bit. Garnett is not a particularly physical assignment. Gasol has to hustle a bit and wait for the cold spell to come. He was awful last night, most notably, of course, when Garnett slammed the put back. Gasol was out to lunch on that pivotal play. Oh well, we'll see what transpires in Game 2. I think the Lakes will take it with better shooting down the stretch.

Good post. Agree.

What the hell is up with this scheduling? Took forever for game 1 to be played and then they play it on a Thursday night, then game 2 is 3 days later at 8pm on a Sunday? Guess they think everyone stays up until 11pm on a Sunday night. And these are the games played on the East coast. Wonder if games in LA will start at 10pm or something.
