Nation's top class?

8 Rivals 100 players. 5 in the top 41.

15 in the ESPN 150. 6 in the top 20.

Perhaps the nation's #1 DE prospect (Jeffcoat), #1 LB prospect (Hicks), 2 of the nation's top WR's (White, Davis), 1 of the top DT's (Bible), 3 very highly additions at DE (Wilson), LB (Jackson), and DT (Dorsey).

I know Texas is #2 behind Florida in both Rivals and ESPN list. However Texas has 21 four stars or better on Rivals to Florida's 20. The entire state of Texas was only given 2 five stars this year so you might be inclined to think that some of our in state guys are bit underrated. Davis for instance is ranked very highly on both lists but sits as a very high four star on both. In fact he is one spot away from being a 5 star on ESPN's list. Davis is one spot below him.

Well even if it's not the nation's top class it is damned sure the best class Mack has ever hauled. Way to go Mack!

Here's a recap of ESPN top 150 recruits as of this afternoon, comparing the consensus top 2 programs (FL and UT
hookem.gif
) then comparing their results against our 2 biggest rivals: ousux and aggy

Top 10: FL - 4, UT - 2, ou - 0, am - 0
Top 25: FL - 6, UT - 6, ou - 1, am - 0
Top 50: FL - 12, UT - 7, ou - 2, am - 0
Top 100: FL - 14, UT - 10, ou - 4, am - 3
Top 150: FL - 16, UT - 15, ou - 6, am - 4

Not bad....

We should all remember that these star rankings are a good means of measurement but ultimately they don't have any more real value than pre-season rankings.

There is a boat-load of talent recruited every year. The fact that these kids that are all 3 stars or above should indicate that they are currently viewed as being the best. I don't care if we're #1 or #5 or whatever in ranking this class. To me when it comes to recruiting classes, #2 is just as good as #1 or #5.

However, the bottom line is this:

I love that we can get a class this sick with almost entirely Texas talent. I also love that most of the players that make this class so allsome are on defense. BOOM!!!BOOM!!!BOOM!!!

I absolutely love this recruiting class, but Florida's class is ridiculously talented and deep. I would say that Texas narrowed the gap between 1 and 2 today, but widened the gap between the top 2 and the rest of the schools.

it's almost impossible to differentiate between yours and florida's class since this isn't an exact science. when two teams are that close in star ranking and number of schollies..... it is really a wash. very difficult to tell. the stories of yours, alabama, and florida's class will be played out on the field.

it will be interesting to see what USC and FSU sign. both don't have many commits at this point and i'm real interested in seeing what USC does down the stretch.

on the other hand, some of your classes that were a little lower ranked lately because of low number signees (which is sign of stability in recruiting) have turned about pretty well for you guys too.

but this class not only has the star rankings, some of your players were among the very best in the all star games. darius white and mike davis come to mind right off the bat.

Two things I like to watch more than the lists are:

a) Who else offered the guys we got? Are we beating Northern Nowhere St or LSU/OU/etc? Things looked awesome on that front this year.

b) Who did we offer but didn't accept. I think we offered DeAndrew White, but that was pretty late into his recruiting. Dixon is the other I can think of. I don't follow this religiously, so I'm probably missing someone, but I don't remember us being spurned by many.

More info on offers from a poster on OB:
I was looking at UT's class and did an advanced search for players who received an offer from UT (Committed and uncommitted, but only those with offers) and saw UT had offered only 32 players this year.

When I switch the team to OU it said there were 118 scholarship offers out from OU to players. I know that often those are player reported and some may be verbal "invites" and not written offers, but I was surprised at the number.

THEN, I looked further:

A&M had 94
Nebraska had 195
Oklahoma State had 132
Florida had 134
USC had 72
Ohio State had 60
Alabama had 119
Auburn had 126
LSU had 94
Tenneessee had 228 - wow???
Penn State had 57
Georgia had 108

No wonder Meyer almost had a heart attack. He invests so much of his time in recruiting, like Mack Brown, but has 3 times the work to do.

Still that is a lot of kids for teams to deal with.

In some ways, Mack has an easier job recruiting than most staffs (maybe that is why Muschamp turned Tenneesee down).

everybodygodeep - thanks, that is exactly the type of info I was looking for. What an incredible success rate.

I'm not sure how many more scholarships Florida has to offer, but they aren't done:

I don't care about 5star vs 4 star. Hard enough to rank all these players with ANY accuracy, much less make a hard cutoff to separate by stars. On ESPNs list this year #12 gets 5*s , #13 gets 4*s. No one reasonable would really give #12 a better chance of success than #13. Fla's real strength to me is they have 6 0f the top 28 and 11 of the top 50 on that list. Texas has 6 of the top 20 and 10 of the top 86.

sounds like a solid #2. So our top 10 against their top 11, no doubt they are ranked higher. Would be interesting to take those 21 young men and compare their academics.

Average the SAT scores, ours vs. theirs. That could help determine who is most likely staying in school. An even better method would be to use the four years of high school. I don't know how you would compare them, because of weird things like preferential grades for some kids.

I guess one way to compare would be to just count the number in the top 40% of their class.

Whichever school has the higher number of top 40% scholars has the most likely chance of keeping their recruits on campus and contributing.

We flirted with Seastrunk, however pulled all interest a LONG time ago due to certain issues, as mentioned earlier in the thread. So, in essence, he wasn't offered. Not sure we offered Nelson, never got a clear answer on that.

I'd put UT & Fla. at #1 & #1A. Who you put where depends on which rankings you look at. Both schools' classes are head-&-shoulders above everyone else, except maybe 'Bama's (who is just above the shoulders).

Pretty cool that we lost one head to head with OU in Peterson, who I think is better than 3 star. They will not beat us but "once in a while" if this continues much more.

Lost two to aggy in Nelson and Matthews with the latter really being the "loss" at this point given our other LB commits.

Also our 3 star DT commit is better IMO than his ranking, with Dorsey, Davis, Wilson also under rated IMO.

Not just a good class for this year, but Mack's best ever.

Great, Great job.

The 02 class had such horrible attrition, I think we could get better long term success from this one. 02 had Vince though and he makes up for 3-4 of the attrition losses.

Another large advanatge that I think Texas has over a lot of other schools is that the kids are almost all from Texas. They are less likely to get homesick than teams that recruit across the country like OU or USC.

I do not know if Florida mainly recruits Florida or is all over. I am amazed that thye have done so well with the "retirement" of UM.

SIAP: Rivals only gave out a few 5*'s this year, fewer than in the past. Florida gets a lot of points for their 2 more 5 stars than Texas. Other than that, these classes are very good. Both defensive classes are sick. Florida may have better DT's, Texas has better DE's, Texas has better LBs, and Florida has better DB's.

Got to love Texas' defense going forward. The time will come when the defense will make sure Texas is in every game - no matter what.

Texas probably has the best WR, DE, and LB classes in the country. They have a solid DT, DB, and QB class to go along with that. If Cobbs is a RB then you have a solid RB class as well.

#1 in my book.
