A good friend of mine describes watching Nascar the same as watching a parking lot for excitement. A bunch of people appear to be suckers for it though, to each his own.
That 2 car formation is still better than the normal restrictor plate pack where everyone must literally go the exact same speed. Restrictor plate racing is still really artificial though, and NASCAR seems to try in all of their races to artificialize the race to bunch them up and try to get a close finish when most of the cars that finish up front truly had no business being there, but got lucky by the way the uncountable "debris" cautions fall. At least today NASCAR was lucky enough to have contrived a form of "racing" where someone was inevitably spun out every 10 laps to eliminate the need for the shady cautions (I mean, do you really think there was any less debris on the track than normal just because there was no lack of legitimate cautions and Dale Jr. was near the front until he wrecked?).
It may be boring to you, but do you know any of the stories of the people racing?
I started watching NASCAR as a kid when Richard Petty, David Pearson etc were racing. Then came Dale Earnhart and later Jeff Gordon.
Lots of changes since the early days, some good, some not.
But I think to appreciate the sport today, you need to identify with at least one of the individuals racing. That makes a difference
