This thread is not really about the movie, but about the main character's favourite animal: the liger. I always thought that this was some terrible joke about a made up animal. WRONG.

Ligers really do exist... They are the LARGEST big cat in the world. There is a liger in FL that stands up on his hind paws and is 12 ft. tall. His name is Hercules and he weighs 900 lbs. Who knew?

Also, Tigons exist as well.

There is also a Tion, which is a cross between a male tiger and a female lion. The primary differences are that tions are smaller than ligers and do not have magical powers.

I looked on wikipedia. There are all sorts of genetic cross breedings of cats (jaguar, lion, cheetah, tiger,etc).
