Myck Kabongo decommits (Update: re-commits)

Some college programs build pipelines through agents like worldwide wes, some through AAU programs ala Indiana or Josh Pastenor/Memphis. Texas under Rick Barnes has established its pipeline with Findley Prep, a seemingly nebulous house in Las Vegas, that somehow home-schools a complete roster of division I talent. You foks really need to Google that place up. I'm not certain I feel much better about the way the Horns are hooking talent, than I do about a Calipari or Scott Drew's methods. Truth is, i think kids are starting to see that while Barnes has gotten guys to the NBA, he hasn't done much with the talent he has landed at the college level.

There's a big different between the Findlay pipeline and what Pastner, Cal, and Drew do. We have a pipeline to a high school. They have "connections" to AAU teams and runners that they pay to influence recruits.

Our "pipeline" is not Findley Prep. Our pipeline with these guys is their AAU program. Avery Bradley went to Findley after he committed to us. Tristan Thompson went to Findley after he committed to us. Myck Kabongo went to Findley after he committed to us. Cory Joseph is the only player that was at Findley when he committed to us, and that had more to do with Thompson and their AAU connection than anything.

As for Findley, it is NOT a homeschool. They are affiliated with a private school in Las Vegas. They just go by Findley since their donor is named Findley.

Not sure why this thread was derailed so suddenly. Can somebody say why he decommitted? And what this means for the horns next year?

3ball, things are a little different for Findlay this year. The Henderson International School decided to close its high school program. Findlay looked around and decided its best alternative was to bring in a few teachers just for the basketball team.

Bierce, that's interesting. I thought I had read something where the Henderson School had decided to bring in some teachers just for the Findley Players, in order to keep their affiliation. Guess I remember wrong. Thanks for the update.

As for Kabango and next season, I think it REALLY hurts us if Joseph proves to not be an elite PG. If Joseph is an elite PG, then it doesn't hurt as bad. Still will hurt though because Kabango is an NBA guard. Super fast and quick. Like TJ, but taller. I also don't think there is anyone out there we could go after that would actually help us.

Looks like he is a Horn again:

Kabongo re-commits

The great thing about this in his comments is that he sounds smart enough to know why he did it (decommitted) in the first place, and smart enough to know that he'll probably be the face of the program when he shows up.

This year might be tough, but it's nice to know that there's more help on the way. The cavalry has been called in. If only there were some post/forward guys too...

what great and unexpected news!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great explanation offered up by that young man too.

I'm glad to see the re-commit, but is anyone else a little concerned about a kid who commits and then de-commits AND and re-commits within a matter of days? I understand he is just a kid, but c'mon.

"..."I was just looking to make sure I was making the right decision. Unfortunately, I chose the wrong method," he said in a text message. "Looking back I didn't deal with it properly but it's something I can learn from as a person," he said in the text. "So, there's no point for me to go through the process again just to do it. ... There's no need to waste their time and energy and that would be unfair to them. Yet again, I don't want people to think I did this as something to get attention. I jumped the gun on how I was feeling and I'm truly sorry to everyone involved from fans to coaches and programs.

"As for Texas fans, I'm sorry and I will continue working hard to make the impact they expect me to make come next fall," ..."

That's good enough for me....
