Myck good as gone?

The AAS said today that Kabongo is as good as gone. I don't get it. He is fast, quick, and sometimes finds open players, but what else is there to make the NBA want him? He was so bad in the Tech game. Of course, everyone else stood dead still much of the game, so it probably was hard to get others involved, but he certainly didn't. He played it like a one-man game, and has never shown a great shooting touch. Where's the beef? He seems like a nice kid, but may be living in a world of delusion regarding the NBA. If he can get drafted and on a developmental team, like Joseph, there might be hope, but I wouldn't count on getting drafted if I were him. Barnes and the media love him, and the consensus seems to be that he is great. What am I missing?

Meanwhile, I think Barnes has made a fool of himself by keeping McLellan on the bench for virtually entires games this year. I know defense is important, but isn't scoring part of the game, too?

I too had wondered about the same thing. He is a good player, but I just don't see why everybody thinks that he is such a lock to make it into NBA. May be the publicity from being kept out by NCAA helped create a better situation for him than had he played all of this year?

Really, can any NBA quality player ever go 0-12 in shooting against that hapless TTech team? Everybody thinks that the NBA guys don't even look at a guy's record?

So, yeah. What are we missing here?

Kabongo will be drafted - though possibly a 2nd rounder at this point. The NBA draft is more about potential than stats and Myck has plenty of that.

I didn't think either Avery Bradley or Cory Joseph were ready but they both went and got paid. It's awfully hard to fault them when the alternative is to stay and be berated by Barnes for every little mistake you make.

Yeah, Cory and Avery have proven that anything can happen in the draft. Myck has only had a small sample to show scouts this year, but he will almost certainly declare and see if he can raise his stock in the camps and personal workouts. Someone may take a flyer on him the late first(if he can impress in any of these camps and workouts), but he is most likely a mid to late second. He does not want anything else to do with the NCAA.

I wonder what Barnes is doing playing him so much and virtually taking Felix out of the rotation. What are we playing for at this point and why wouldn't he split their minutes evenly?

I think Barnes is actually hoping a late run would get us into the NIT. I think if we could pull to .500 and get some name recognition out there with Kabongo, then his argument has merit. His TTech game aside, he's definitely playing a lot better than Felix. Especially with his rebounds, speed, assists, and turnovers.

That said, the teams that make the NIT are usually around 50-75 in the RPI, and we're sitting pretty at 115.

I think he's definitely gone as well. The announcers had a Kabongo orgy over the OU comeback and that will be his highlight reel going into the Draft. Scouts will gloss over the bad games and poor decisions and say "nothing a year on the pine or in the NBDL couldn't cure." He's never going to be a franchise PG, but he's easily as good as the aforementioned Canadian experiments were.

Horns11, good point on the RPI. Did not think of that angle. I hate Kirk Bohls, but he may have been on to something with his prediction of a Texas vs Aggy first round NIT matchup. NIT would drool over that.

It's not a matter of what makes sense or if the NBA wants him. He has an ego and probably some folks close to him who say he is ready.

IMO, J'covan was alot more talented and right now he's playing basketball in a local recreation league. Better get some solid advice before you screw up your career.

J'Covan played for AGOR in Greece this year. He probably made six figures including his Miami Heat summer league stuff.

Not a bad living.

Why begrudge someone who can get a decent paycheck immediately as opposed to a measly scholarship check, especially if he isn't from an affluent family and needs the money to support a child/family? I don't consider that "screwing up your career."

I don't fault J'Covan or Myck for jumping at the chance to make money now vs. continuing to live the lifestyle of a broke college kid. Even if it's not an NBA paycheck, there's still decent money to be made. Furthermore, if they decided to stay here another year, there would still be no guarantee they make it to the NBA.

^^^ completely agree.

1 more year here will only take 1 more year away from a potential paycheck. This staff has not done a good job developing the players and improving draft stock recently. Actually the only other players during Barnes tenure that have 'developed' into an NBA talent is Royal Ivey and Dexter Pittman. Most of our players in the NBA were top rated 5 star recruits who would've made the NBA regardless of what program they played for. Although kudos to Barnes for his ability to bring that much talent here.

Because of the lack of talent in this draft, I think Myck will be a 2nd rd pick and could play himself up to a late 1 rounder based on workouts and need (Who really thought Cory Joseph would be a 1st rounder?).
Good luck Myck!

I think he was scheduled to appear on LHN for a segment this week but I haven't seen him on yet. That probably doesn't bode well.

I would love to see him come back, but I respect his decision, whether it be to leave, or to stay.

He definitely has to improve at both ends of the court if he's going to make it in the NBA and I believe he is going to spend some time in the D league working on his deficiencies.

Maybe being around better players will make him a better player as well. He hasn't had much opportunity for that while at Texas.

"Regardless of the decline this has caused with the basketball program, the really sad thing is that most of them will probably never go back & get their college degree."

You wouldn't hear about the ones who DO come back to get their degrees, unless TexasSports.com did a little blurb about it. I honestly believe J'Covan will fall into that group that does come back and get it.

When you have a little more financial flexibility, you don't have to do the whole graduation thing within 5 years. Hell, even Maurice Evans did it, and rumor has it that he didn't attend a single class during that Spring semester before he left for the draft. Going to class is a second job for student athletes. I'd say fewer than 10 percent of basketball and football players are actually parlaying the skills they learn in the classroom to a "future career." It's one of the many shams that the NCAA likes to propagate.

The value of a college degree, particularly a "youth and community studies" degree, isn't exactly a field of need in today's world. Just "getting" the degree isn't what people hype it up to be. I have a degree and a job in an unrelated field. Sure, the experience of college helped me to achieve my job goals, but I don't think I'd be any less of a man today if it took me longer to get the degree while I tried out some other stuff on the side.

I think there is a bigger issue about whether a degree is all that, etc.

I agree; a college degree isn't for every one, probably way too many kids go to college to do the ultimate work they do.

What is messed up is that kids like Myck didn't come to UT-Austin to GET a college degree. Sure, he may complete the requirements and get the degree one day.

But, he came to Austin to play basketball.

Period.

College sports isn't "college" sports anymore in most cases, at least with the major schools.

It's current and former students paying big bucks in fees and donations to fund what are essentially semi-pro sports programs so that they can brag to fellow workers in the next cubicle at work.

We're not going back to "student athletes" at the major programs anymore, so we've got to face it --- the free market is pushing on 18-year olds to use the various universities as they use them.

Just the way it is and probably going to get moreso.

Basketball should adopt the college baseball rules about leaving early and it would solve these kind of problems to a large degree.

Till they do that it really doesn't matter what any of us think one way or the other.

Surprise!!!!!

we should name a sewer on campus after him; I don't care how good he is/can be, he scuttled a season with his reckless disregard of the rules.

And Marcus Smart (projected #2 overall pick) is coming back to Okie State next year. Why can't we recruit these kind of guys rather than the guys that will jump at the NBA the first sniff they get.

notanative - actually, I was asking why we can't recruit the top caliber guys that actually want to stay in school past one year and will not jump to the NBA the first chance they get. In fact, we are recruiting guys that are highly recruited and will jump to the NBA even if they are not guaranteed a first round draft status (see Joseph and Kabongo). Smart is projected #2 overall and is staying in school. It is a mindset and a program situation. Barnes breeds these guys to be NBA players, not be part of a program. That is clear and Rick has said as much.
