I have some thoughts on next season, and the years ahead. First of all, I am thrilled to have Cokie on board. From what others have said she looked good last night, with 4 blks and 4 rbs in just 14 mins of action. And while she only scored 2 pts, 13 others scored 4 or less. I am just glad the nation's #5 recruit chose the Horns, and believe she will be a tremendous, and productive, addition to the program. In another thread I said I was disappointed about Bone, but happy she made the decision she felt was right for her. And as another poster pointed out, it would have been unusual for two of country's top 3 posts to end up at the same place. The truth is some recruits decide to play closer to home and others opt for a different experience, and something less familiar, and I respect Kelsey's decision.
Some posts have mentioned the playing time given to freshmen this season, and the average mpg of our three newcomers was 17. Their cumulative stats - 14.3 pts, 7.8 rbs, 3.8 asts, 2.6 stls and 2 blks per game. A nice start, and I'm certain these numbers will rise significantly next year. And, our #1 rebounder and #2 scorer this season was a sophmore, which means 37% of our scoring (and about the same % for rebounding) came from underclassmen.
Perhaps more importantly, the Horns return three of their top four scorers, and a whopping 78% of their offensive production next season. The current freshmen should be stronger and wiser, we bring in a top 5 recruit and much needed post presence, and are still in the running for the lone undecided McD's All-American. I also believe Brittainey, Erika, Earnesia and Kristen will be focused on making their final season both memorable, and successful.
Finally, the Horns already have recruits on board for both 2010 and 2011, including being one of the few schools to have landed one of the big prizes for the latter. Most of all, I believe in this program, and the incredible coaching staff we have in place. As Hartung put it in the ESPN article on her signing, "everything was just a little bit bigger and a little bit better at Texas. The people are great, from the academic counselors to the players." Amen to that. Great program, great coaches, great university, all set in the best city in the country. I have no doubts about the future of this team, both next season and in the years ahead.
