she is writing down every recipe she knows in a little notebook and giving it to me! This is a real big deal as most of the food she cooks was passed down from her old blind grandmother orally at the turn of the century in cajun country. A good portion of the food she cooks (or way she cooks it) i have never seen anywhere so i am excited.

I'm talking:

Crawfish-head stew
Crawfish Pie
various Gumbos
various etouffees
various court boullions
Banana Pudding
BBQ Crabs
various cakes
maque choux
Dirty rice
Red beans and rice
Fried Frog legs
Fried tadpole tails
jambalayas

plus much more i cant think of off the top of my head yum

Thats about the best gift I have heard of in years. Congrats

My grandma did this for me a few years ago. Every recipe involves a large amount of fat, which is allsome. And she refers to margarine as "oleo". That's old school, baby.

I got one of these from my mother for Christmas my first year of college.

All of the recipes I ate as a kid, just a wonderful gift.

That is a hell of a gift, Pip. My grandmother was an amazing cook, but didn't have a single written recipe in her house. My cousins and I always said we need to sit with her and watch her make things and write it down, but we never did. I got to spend a lot more time around her than my cousins, so I can make quite a few of her dishes, but I'm afraid that there are a few that are lost forever.

My father passed away in June from cancer. In his last few weeks on earth, I would sit on the foot of his bed while he told me stories, and related his recipes and cooking techniques to me. Growing up, I probably spent hundreds of hours watching/helping my dad cook. He could seemingly open the refrigerator and make a good meal out of whatever he found.

Among the recipes he told me: his particular version of vegetable soup, beef cream gravy, ham and redeye gravy, and Brunswick stew.

Unfortunately, my grandma died without passing on her gumbo recipe, so I wasn't about to let my dad's unique recipes go to the grave with him.
