My favorite things from the game

Besides the final score, of course, this first game provided many reasons to be happy, at least for me. Here are a few of my top
yippee.gif

1. Colt McCoy's accuracy was truely remarkable;
2. The offensive line was supurb protecting him;
3. Chiles played some, and completed passes which will help his confidence;
4. The inexperienced secondary was very scrappy, made big plays and never gave up on any plays;
5. The D line put pressure on the QB and hurried him into throwing early time after time.
6. Cody Johnson's tough, bruising running style. He almost decapatated a FAU d back with a stiff arm on his TD run that was called back.

FAU was a scrappy team, physical, bordering on dirty, with a top flight passing QB with very good big athletic receivers.

This was a very nice opening win for the good guys.

My favorite thing from the game was watching Blaine Irby do his best David Thomas impression.

It was definitely a thing of beauty watching Colt just play with the FAU defense. That pass to Chris O on the wheel route was right on the money and what a great play by Chris to go get the ball.

I look forward to watching Dan Buckner grow as a player here and play a larger role in our offense throughout the season. That catch he made in the endzone (although out of bounds) was a display of great body control, size and hands. I have a feeling that we'll be seeing a lot of jump balls to him in the endzone this season.

I do wish that Mcgee would have gotten more carries. Hopefully Fozzy will be back and ready for the UTEP game b/c ball control and TOP is going to play a very crucial role in the success of this football team.

Thats right goose, and of the 4 incompletions, at least 3 were drops that Colt put on the numbers.

This could be a very special year for McCoy if the young receivers can make some plays.

I am sure it has been talked about or mentioned but some may not have heard/read. Colt was at 14 of 14 in passes, two short of breaking the record. He shares the record of 15 of 15 with VY.

Kirkendoll dropped what would have been 15 of 15. He made up for it later with a TD catch and I was happy for him. You never want to be that guy. But Colt could likely care less about the streak and the record and was more happy for Kirk to get a TD and that the team won.

Oh, and the announcer's had just gotten through making a big deal about it and put graphics up showing the record. Yes, the media jinx.

1. Colt McCoy
2. Blaine Irby
3. the OL
4. Bobino, Kindle, Muckelroy, Norton

And last but not least the coaching situation. Last years failure at the LB position is ended. Akina back in the job he is happy at working with the DBs and special teams(punt block anybody). I mean actual adjustments being made in the first half and working.

I agree with most of what you had to say with one exception. There was no pressure on the passer. We did not get a sack, and their QB was not often forced to rush. We did not show much of our blitz package because it was not needed, but our pass defense numbers would have been better if we had given some more pressure.

In the first half, we ran 90% of the snaps in cover 2 & 3. In the second, we ran some man-to-man and the change of pace helped a lot. Kindle needs to work on his feet and hands. He is strong, but all he did was bull rush the tackle on just about every play. Dude, try a swim move, rip, spin, SOMETHING!!!!

Our young safeties did something that position had not done for about three years: play safety instead of linebacker. Yes, they got a little to deep on a couple of plays, and yes they missed some tackles. Still, when you are starting two freshmen safeties, you would rather have to much depth than not enough, and tackling is always rough in the first game as you transition from camp to full contact.

I like the way we look. There is a lot of room to improve, and I think we will.

One thing that you did not specifically mention was the level of play through the entire game. We managed to stay focused and fired up for the entire game. The guys did not come out for the 3rd quarter and look like they were worried about where they party that night. They came out, kicked ***, and kept the pedal to the metal. We are going to need that for some dog-fights later in the year.

OK, how about:

We got no sacks. We never hit the quarterback while he was throwing. We had very few knock downs if any. We gave up 250 yards passing in the first half.

Sorry, but if you think that kind of pressure is going to cut it against Tech, Missouri, Kansas, and OU, then you are nuts.

Irby stepping up when that was a huge question mark is huge. Colt looking like a late junior season QB going thru his progressions and making accurate throws. A big back in Johnson showing up when that was a big question mark coming in.

zero sacks and zero turnovers was huge.

Extra...I have to disagree, as well. I counted at least five times we knocked the qb on his *** in the process of throwing the ball.

Also:

1. Rusty Smith is a potential NFL quarterback
2. FAU has a quick release pass offense
3. Boom MF'er does not run a 'must sack' defense, nor does he really care if we get a sack...not allowing a score is much more important to him

Actually, that's exactly the kind of pressure that will work against Tech and Missouri. Spread teams don't get sacked much, but you want to make the QB know he's not going to be able to progress through 5 guys. Muschamp's best D's never had many sacks, but constant pressure.

What is up with people having a hissy fit over the first quarter?

Who gives two Shits what happened in the first quarter, if it got corrected in the second half and we won by 40+ points.

Yea, we can't play like the first quarter and beat good teams, but if I'm not mistaken this was the FIRST game.

How about all you unhappy defensive geniuses tap the brakes a little and give these newcomers a chance to get up to speed. I don't think the sky is falling just yet.

Where to begin? There were so many things to like about this game.

Above all, the new, under control methodical offense that featured lots of short passing. It got colt and the receivers into a nice rhythm and moved the chains reliably.

the fact that the horns have addressed some of their problems from last year: reliable power running, tall fast WRs. Blaine Irby made some spectacular catches. The O line was huge and looks to be a strength this year. Chiles completed 4 of 5 passes, including a TD.

The game showed that the horns have a load of weapons on O and no apparent weaknesses. This means that they can take whatever the D gives them.

The horns' D held a good offense to 10 points with a pretty vanilla gameplan. I particularly like Muschamp's attitude of focusing on the technical aspects of correcting the problems.

Blocking the punt was a great thing to see again. Akina is back!

In no particular order:

- singing "The Eyes.." for the first time this season with 98,053 of my closest friends!
- Cody Johnson.
- Colt McCoy
- Blake Gideon.
- 2nd half defensive adjustments.
- Seeing the beginnings of an elite defense and its effects on the offense it goes up against daily!

Beat the hell outta the Miners... as long as it's not past your bedtime!

I don't feel Muschamp would have commented in his post game comments that he was happy with the pass rush if that wasn't the case..
