My Dell Experience

I bought a Dell 8300 one year ago today (with a one year warranty).

Last Wednesday, I popped a CD in the DVD-ROM drive and .....nothing.

I ran through all the usual diagnostics to no avail. I have a burner also, so no biggie. If I ever decided I needed the other drive I'd throw one in for thirty bucks.

Then I decided what the hell, let's try the warranty. I figured they would probably want me to send them the machine(after a couple of dozen canned troubleshooting emails), so I would blow it off at that point.

I fired off an email explaining what I had tried. When I came home Thursday, I had received an email saying a tech would contact me to replace the drive. In disbelief, I told my wife and she told me they had already called. I called them back (with zero hold time) and they told me they would come Monday.Saturday I got a call from the tech who said he was in the area and could do it then. He came to my house and was in and out in 10 minutes. I am now back to two drives working perfectly.

I have read so many bad things about Dell on here that I figured I should tell this story. It couldn't have ended any better for me.

I have no problem with Dell or Gateway...the two companies that I've purchased current and past pcs/laptops.

With that said...Dell or whoever is giving me the run around on a rebate I mailed in...they said I didn't mail it with the proper docs...but I did. Hopefully it works out.

i've got a dell laptop on the way right now. it spent a week in the "boxing" stage. i was rather frustrated.

^^^
maybe the guy in your sig ate it, and they had to box another one

A bad CD drive is relatively easy to diagnose and get replaced. The troubles start when the problem is hard to nail down. We had a pc that crashed at work. I was sure it was the hard drive. The Dell tech disagreed with me. He said it was the RAM. I said ok, send a tech to replace it because I was pissed and wasn't going to make it easier on them. Tech comes and switches out the RAM and I still can't reinstall windows. Next tech thinks it's the processor. They send out a tech with a processor and still nothing. Next tech says it has to be the motherboard. Tech comes and still nothing. They finally send out another tech with a hard drive. Problem fixed. Dell ended up replacing all those perfectly functioning parts because their tech support people aren't that smart.

dell doesn' give you the runaround on rebates. the company they hire to administer the rebate program does. and they are all ******* idiots over there. i personally argued with the rebate folks many times when i was in sales at dell. it's like they're all grown in a lab and taught to speak only two phrases - "it's not our fault" and "just wait a few more weeks for your rebate"

yeah...that's why I said or whoever...didnt know the name of the company Dell used. But that friendly email they send me telling me I didn't follow the steps had the Dell logo all over it.

i hate rebates. sometimes they're really enticing but now i just hate the whole process.

staples easy rebates are very good. also, dell's specials and coupons shouldn't necessitate rebates anyways. they take a lot off with that stuff.

yes. it was CIT. i believe it is now incorporated as dell financial services via a partnership with CIT. then there's the actual dell account and it's all very confusing. depends on whether you lease the computer, finance via 60 SAC or establish a net 25 credit account.

it's great so far zork, thanks for the link again. I mean I know there are faster/higher quality builds out there, but the amount of stuff I got on it that was discounted was fantastic. I'm quite happy with it so far. Now I'll know to check that web site before I purchase another pc/laptop.

yea YChang, I've bought 3 machines in the past 5 years off that site. I try not to visit it too much because it can have that walmart effect of making you buy stuff you don't REALLY have to have... cause it's cheap.

Great deal today too:

the rebate is for a dell laser printer purchased earlier....they said that they didn't get a valid proof of purchase. The instruction on their web site said to send in the rebate form (pulled off the web site) and the packing slip...which was on the box. I've sent both in. I'll have to call now and see what they tell me.
