My computer sucks

My internet browsing experience sucks. My PC freezes up or just plain blows up all the time.

I am so tired of this thing. I have tried everything - virus software, spyware software, changing browsers to Mozilla...nothing works.

There is nothing wrong with specs - this is a good computer.

Does anybody have a fresh idea on how to fix this?

If not, do I just have to buy a new computer every 3 years because I am too stupid to keep one from going kaput?

And if I do buy one, how the hell do I get several thousand iTunes and photos to the new PC?

Any help is appreciated

Get an external harddrive, move all your files to it. Reinstall the OS, drivers, etc and start from scratch.

Once I get My Documents on to the external hard drive, how to I wipe the computer clean? I can do the next step (reinstall Windows, Office, etc), but I don't know how to "clean the slate".

Back in high school, we would type "format c:" or something like that into DOS, and that would do the trick...

Don't just copy "My Docs". In this path C:documents and settings[user] you want the desktop, my docs and favorites at least. If you are running outlook, i would backup everything before hand as well.

After this, you can reinstall the OS, and during this process it will reformat the HD. If the is XP, be sure to format NTFS full (not quick).

you can use the file transfer wizard to collect all that data, but I would just do it manually as mia described. I would also backup the outlook pst file as he says. Take the XP disc and boot to it. It will do a clean install and give you the option to do a format of the HDD.

Make sure that you get all the documents off your computer that you want. Once you format they are gone (or at the very least, a major pain in the *** to restore).

There's little reason to remain a Windows masochist. Get a Mac. Take your PC to an Apple Store and they will transfer everything for you. No work on your part, and you'll be good to go for a very long time with none of the crap you're dealing with now. Macs are gaining significant market share for good reason. If you think you absolutely need Windows for some reason, no problem, just run it on your Mac when necessary. Then, unload your PC on some other masochist.
