My %^$# computer so slow on the internet

I have 2 computers, one a desk top (the one I am bitching about, XP OS and 2 GHZ AMD chip, 512 MB SDRAM) the other a laptop. I have a DSL (Bell South) into a modem then it goes into a router so I can work on both systems. My lap top is fine (over 1.2 MPS, but my desktop's download is like a 28 k modem!!!

I took it in and had the registry cleaned up. I have spy bot on it and ad-ware along with Norton's firewall. The computer guy said I had alot of **** in the registry and it caused the computer to run slow. When I got it back it was fine but now it's slow again...... what can I do? I am so freaking frustrated.

The fact that there is a lot of **** in your registry may or may not be a problem. Go get SpySweeper (free) and have it do a scan. It especially will work on your registry. I am probably suspecting some spyware.

Secondly, get Hijack This (free) and have it do a scan. It will work on your startup and running processes (where your memory is eaten up) and therefore might make it run slow.

I've found that there's not one or even two anti-crapware programs you need. There are about 7 you need to cover everything: SpySweeper, SpyBot, Spyware Blaster, Adaware, Hijack This, DCOMbobulator, and CWShredder. If you get all of this installed in a folder on your desktop - then you can easily find and run them once a week.

SBC is/were on strike so service may not be optimal. I noticed my max download speed was about a 1/4 slower than normal lately.

not really affecting web browsing, though

I am ready to throw my f'n computer out the f'n window. It runs VERY slow now, and locks up half the time. I haven't changed **** on the settings from when I got it. Also I went out of town last weekend and now I can't even connect to the internet. I get this weird error message and a bunch of symbols I can't read. I use yahooDSL and the modem when it is turned on looks like this.......Power...Green light.......Ethernet......Green light........ DSL..........green light.......Internet........dark (no light).......activity........ every once in a while it will blink........
I need help in a big way. I am sick of the computer running slow and don't know how to fix it. I am sick of the internet running slow, and sometimes not connecting.

i dont think its possible to reinstall without the disk being present.

if u are a current student/staff, u can pick up xp pro for < $10 at the campus store (or if u know a current student)

if you have a router, then u might have the encryption turned on and that can slow down your connection.

Unfortunately, a clean install of windows is usually a great way to fix unknown problems. Over the course of installing different programs, services, codecs, drivers etc... some of thse start to conflict.

You modem lights are correct if you are hooked up to a router. If you are not using a router, i think the internet light should be on when you are conncected to the isp.

My %$#&*^* ethernet card was going bad....I bought a new one and now it flies......................I didn't know it could go back gradually----I thought it either works or doesn't work, I learn something new everyday. THANKS for all of the advice..........

I downloaded both AdAware and SpySweeper but everytime I run them, they both freeze in the middle of the scan. I'm clueless.
