My CD-RW drive won't recognize

the damn disc. The device manager says the drive is working properly, but it acts as if no disc has been inserted. I've tried several blank discs and nothing. Any suggestions?

Do you have CD burning software installed?

Are you using the same brand of disc over and over? Have you tried another brand? Are you using the cheapest discs you can find? Spend a few more dollars on a quality name brand disc and I think your problem will go away.

Mine did this occasionally before. Make sure you have a decent amount of free space on your computer. I know with mine, I was trying to burn a 650mb movie and I only had 400mb's of space left on my HD, that's what fixed mine.

OK, I bought some different CD's and those didn't work either. Here is the situation. I have a Dell desktop running XP (about two years old). It came with Roxio Easy CD Creator 5. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software a couple of times to try and fix this - all according to Roxio's support website. Still nothing.

When I open the software to format the disc, it doesn't recognize that a disc is in the drive; likewise when using XP's burning function.

I have a feeling that Service Pack 2 has something to do with the problem. I've read that Service Pack 2 screws up Roxio.

The problem is that I am trying to backup my hard drive so that I can reimage the computer and get rid of some other pesky issues. I went out and bought an external hard drive to back everything up instead.

Does anyone think another burning software would do the trick - any recommendations?

Have you updated the drive with the most current firmware?

Not certain that this is your issue because the symptoms don't exactly match up but you could try. This fixes the issue frequently, especially when Roxio is installed.

What are odds that reinstalling XP will not fix this problem?

I have a new Dell laptop that couldn't read some CDs on the CD/DVD drive. After reading a few online articles I uninstalled a program called Sonic DLA ( DNA?) and that fixed the problem.

since your desktop is a little older, that might not be the problem.

I think you should at least try my posted registry hack. There's a very good chance it's your problem. It's worked for me many times.

I tried editing the registry and that didn't work either. Although I've changed firmware, software, and everything else so many times it may be beyond fixability.

Thanks for everyone's help. It turned out to be a faulty drive and Dell sent me a new one that works.

Dell uses those ****** Teac drives and they suck. I have gone through 3 on my brand new desktop at work.

Dell really has fallen off a shelf when it comes to quality.

Mine was a Samsung, the new one is Hitachi - may be the difference between home and corporate.
