My CD drive won't open

It's a Dell 2400 Dimension desktop. Push the button, push on the drive door itself, pull down menus on the Windows Media Player---nothing. Any thoughts? Bueller? Bueller?

Oh yeah (one more thing), go to Start menu, All Programs, My Computer, all that stuff; it doesn't even say there's a D: drive there. wtf?

straighten out a paperclip. now see that hole right there by the button on the drive tray door? stick the paperclip in there and it will open.

If not, power the computer down. When you turn the computer back on press and hold the D drive button. This should open the tray.

My desktop system (not a Dell) does something similar every fourth or fifth reboot. The CD and DVD drives just vanish.

Power down completely, let it sit, and then power back up. That usually works for me.

My CD drive has been messed up for a long time, and none of the things y'all have mentioned have worked for me. Any other ideas, or should I just go buy a new one?

use the paperclip tirck, by the way; if it s a notebook you can remove the drive and most mobels have a reset on the back if the button on the front has been failing you.

I can get mine open with a wine tool, but it still won't do anything once I do. Troubleshooting shows that there are no problems detected, though.

I hate knowing so little about computers!
