My brother's friend just got his TESLA

My brother used to be a middle school and high school computer nerd. His best computer nerd friend never stopped. (Well, neither did my brother, but they took different paths.)

So his friend went to Stanford, got several degrees, went into Venture Capitalism, is responsible for Hotmail existing (and thus all online emails) and was one of the first investors in Skype.

Yesterday he got his TESLA that he ordered last year.

He's pretty happy.

I guess when you've made hundreds of millions of dollars in the computer world and met with a couple of different presidents before your turn 40, you can spring for a TESLA and the wife won't mind.

I'm not arguing that that's not a little strange.

I have no response for that. All I know is that he lives between San Jose & Stanford in one of those valleys in Silicon Valley. Maybe it was easier... Maybe that was their storage garage. I don't know.

Can't explain. Just know that the car is cool... and I want one.

I went to an event to publicize the car about 2 years ago in LA at the Santa Monica airport. There was a long line to ride shotgun in the car to feel the 0-60 in ~4.0 speed, but I got there late and my friend, his sister & dad were about 8 from the front so I couldn't get to them.

They're cool and they'll be turning up in PEOPLE & STYLE before we know it.

Collar poppers can't afford one of those things. And if they could, they still couldn't get one.

RIght now, they are only being delivered to the Jay Lenos and Steve Jobs of this world.

This guy is definitely some kind of VIP to have one delivered. Money just gets you on a waiting list.

Aren't they ~ $130K, with a big waiting list? A friend of mine did some consulting for them, and said it was a great car with a few potential flaws in the electronics.

Uninformed is well informed.

He's kind of a big deal. Especially in the tech world. (I don't mean "Texas Tech" world.)

He's the reason HOTMAIL (and thus all of the online based emails that followed it) exists. When 20 VC companies said "NO" to the guys behind Hotmail, he said "YES". His company invested $300,000 for 15% of the company. Six months later it was sold to Microsoft for $400,000,000. In 6 months, they got 200 TIMES the money back... and this guy became a partner of the company with his name (last initial really) in the title.

His mom told me in 1999-2000 that in the previous year, they took 11 companies public. At that time, IPOs were making small companies worth $1 billion in a day. (She also told me they sold several more.)

If you're familiar with "TED", here he is speaking about his love of Rocketry. (His rapid speech pattern betrays that he was a debater in high school.)

Steve Jurvetson at TED: The Link

He's met with the last two presidents on technology and its future (not that W probably understood a thing he was saying) and if Obama becomes president (this is not a political forum, just an observation), you can make it 3 straight US Presidents. And I think he's only 40 now.

When you don't make a movie and you aren't a politician or a model and you still are the cover of the New York Times Sunday Magazine by the time you're 35, you're a pretty big deal.

Here's his view for the Big Wave Surf Competition at Half Moon Bay (a.k.a. "Maverick") in ~January of this year.

Unlike all of the little people who had to watch from the shore, he rented a helicopter. Here's the caption:

"Hanging out at Mavericks today… out the side of a huge Huey helicopter, sporting vintage bullet holes in the belly from its tour of duty in Vietnam. "

He may have been a nerd in high school, but he's the poster boy for "Revenge of the Nerds" out of the people I know.

BTW, is it any surprise that a well known VC is able to get a Tesla? Draper Fisher Jurvetson has probably already invested in Tesla Motors or Tesla Motors wants the firm to invest. Either way, a managing partner at a major VC firm will not have a problem getting access to new technologies.

Maybe with the cool car his wife will have sex with him. This means the gardner will have to only have her the six other days. Cool car though.

I don't know what they ended up with for their production cars, but they were deciding between a 1 and 2 speed transmission at one point.

The top speed is more than adequate. In real driving, it's handling and acceleration at any point from 0-80 that makes a car fun to drive.

That is one cool car.

I checked out the website. Is it uncool to where a Tesla shirt even though i will never be able to afford the car?

"damn the car. i need to figure out how i can flip $300k 20 times."...

In SIX MONTHS!!

If you figure it out, you'll probably make partner the same day.
