My analysis of the Romney gaffe

The 47% of voters that support him probably agree with him but take issue with how he delivered the message.

The 47% of voters who don't support him are probably not surprised and this reinforces their perception of him.

the remaining independents are probably split down the middle between these two views.

He is just a terrible political candidate. Horrible political instincts. The whole "I won't release my income tax statements" is another example.

He has absolutely no convictions other than that he should be elected President, an empty suit, and people sense that.

As somebody said, people will often vote for the guy they don't like before they vote for the guy they don't trust.

Totally disagree. He offended many who are in the middle by inferring that they are dependent on the government and don't pay taxes. He basically attacked the entire American middle class.

It would be one thing if he said 47% are Democrats and will vote that way no matter what. But that's not all he said.

Also, people in the middle don't want extremists. A presidential candidate who dismisses "47%" of the populace is not going to be the kind of centrist independent voters prefer.

Probably had the same effect on me as it did a lot of other people. Pissed me off that such a large percent dont pay, get yearly bonuses from the Govt(earned tax credits) and the fact I do pay taxes.
Pretty stupid for anyone in middle class America that pays taxes to be hating on Romney for the comment.

I think there are a large number of independents who favor smaller government but don't like the GOP stance on social issues. I don't think they will be put out by this statement.

Sycophants will keep this alive for about 3 more news cycles, then we move on to the debates.

I have long felt that everybody ought to pay some income tax, even if it is only say $30 a year. Too many people don't have any idea where the money comes from. If they were pitching a little in it might make them think a little more.

Romney has not proposed doing anything like that. If he genuinely thinks it is damaging to the country that 47% pay nothing, he should propose a change. He hasn't.

I suspect he was there in an audience of well off would be contributors to his campaign and was just blowing out the tune they like to hear. I have heard similar arguments from my conservative and well off friends for years and so has he. He was just playing to his audience, which his opponent also does all the time.

As a conservative, I am delighted to see Obama wanting to turn the discussion back to jobs, the economy and his preferred agenda of making us over into a European style welfare state. Let's just have both sides go all in on this topic and let the chips fall where they may on November 6.

No more distractions, let's stay with this. OK?

The irony is, the 'gaffe' has actually knocked Romney into an actual message that he can run with.

not nearly as dangerous a positions as "i actually believe in re-distribution". that should scare the hell out of any person who places any value on liberty.

I still think the Romney gaffes are carefully calculated to keep the election close but also calculated for Romney to lose. I don't think the repubs want to win this election. You can expect more dumb statements from Romney. I think they are lining up for 2016. Let Obama turn the economy around or bury himself and the dems, and then the repubs step in like the white knights.

Its refreshing to have a politician speak frankly and truly. If folks vote against him for that reason then we are already lost.

I am voting FOR Romney. He wouldn't have been my first choice, but I believe he is infinitely better than Obama. If you disregard all domestic issues, I cannot trust BO to deal with the extremely perilous times in which we live. Maybe no one will be able to deal with the times. If so, we are done as a nation. We cannot withstand attacks by people who are willing to die to destroy America, because the bottom line is we believe that wars should be fought by soldiers and we are not willing to kill thousands of innocent men, women and children. We will lose to those who could not care less about casualties.
