We have a home theater setup with 5.1. - Last night my A/V receiver stopped responding. I tried to power cycle it, and it won't even turn on. Should I try to get it repaired? If so, where (in Austin)? Should I get a new one? If so, I need advice on what to get. Here are the details:

Dead Unit: Sony STR-DE595 - died after 5 yrs.

Components:
TW HD DVR
Panasonic TH-58PZ750U TV
Samsung DVD HD931
JVC XL-F252BK CD Player
Technics RS TR-575 Stereo/Cassette

If I buy a new receiver, I want to look seriously at multi-room functionality. We have some speakers out by the pool, but we can't support them without using a separate receiver or going to a multi-room receiver.

Assume I can understand what you tell me, but I have no real foundation to think it through on my own.

Funny- I have a similar Sony receiver that I moved to a bedroom- and upgraded with a NAD T763 a/v receiver a few years ago. Night and day difference.

However, before you go out and spend $$$'s - you may want to look at the back- or even open it up- and see if you have a master fuse out, speaker wires/ crossed shorted, or one of the keys on the front panel toggled. Prob not worth taking to a shop- unless you find someone really cheap. I would just put my $50-$100 into a new unit.

The NAD is a real beast of a receiver- not a lot of unnecessary bells/ whistles versus other manufacturers- but, covers all the stuff you'll need well- and has an amazing amp section. When I researched- NAD, Denon, Marantz, Yamaha all came up at the price point I was looking at- with various +/-'s. Some people may disagree- but, you can certainly save some money- if you go the internet route- there are a nmber of legit dealers that will be beat the big box stores. Though, it's good to have a local dealer for the service. (I bought my NAD from a great local store in Chicago- and had it shipped down).

Thanks for the advice - NAD is a bit out of my price range.

As you can see by the components listed, I don't need anything of that caliber.

I wound up getting the Onkyo TX-SR576. It gives me a second zone for the pool speakers, and all the features I need for < $300.

Mr brother recently purchased the Onyko TX-SR506. It's seems like a good bang for you dollar considering it has hdmi
