The "Best" in each category is where I predict the Oscar will go.
"My Second Place" is where I expect the Oscar will go, if my prediction of the winner is wrong.
"Dark Horse" is a nominee that I think is genuinely worthy, but I'd be surprised to see the Academy vote the Oscar that way.
"My Personal Favorite" is the movie or performance which I personally liked best of all those nominated in that category this year.
So here goes.
Best Picture: "Argo" wins.
My Second Place: "Silver Linings Playbook."
Dark Horse: "Lincoln."
My Personal Favorites of the Academy's BP nominees in descending order:
"Silver Linings Playbook."
"Argo."
"Les Miserables."
"Lincoln."
"Django Unchained."
"Life of Pi."
"Zero Dark Thirty."
"Amour."
"Beasts of the Southern Wild."
JMO.
Best Director: Steven Spielberg wins for "Lincoln."
My Second Place: David O. Russell for "Silver Linings Playbook."
Dark Horse: Ang Lee for "Life of Pi."
My Personal Favorite: David O. Russell for "Silver Linings Playbook, plus Ben Affleck should have been nominated for "Argo."
Best Leading Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis wins for "Lincoln."
My Second Place: Hugh Jackman for "Les Miserables."
Dark Horse: Bradley Cooper for "Silver Linings Playbook" or Denzel Washington for "Flight."
My Personal Favorite: Bradley Cooper for "Silver Linings Playbook."
Best Leading Actress: Jennifer Lawrence wins for "Silver Linings Playbook."
My Second Place: Jessica Chastain" for "Zero Dark Thirty."
Dark Horse: Emanuella Riva for "Amour."
My Personal Favorite: Jennifer Lawrence for "Silver Linings Playbook" or Jessica Chastain for "Zero Dark Thirty."
Best Supporting Actor: Tommy Lee Jones wins for "Lincoln."
My Second Place: Robert De Niro for "Silver Linings Playbook."
Dark Horse: Christoph Waltz for "Django Unchained."
My Personal Favorite: Alan Arkin for "Argo" or Robert De Niro for "Silver Linings Playbook."
Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway wins for "Les Miserables."
My Second Place: Sally Field for "Lincoln."
Dark Horse: Jacki Weaver for "Silver Linings Playbook."
My Personal Favorite: Anne Hathaway for "Les Miserables."
Those are the six "main" Oscar categories.
I'll also guess that these "minor" category nominees will be winners:
Animated Feature Film: I think "Brave" wins. "Wreck-It Ralph" is my second guess.
Production Design: "Les Miserables" wins. "Lincoln" is my second guess.
Costume Design: "Anna Karenina."
Cinematography: "Life of Pi" wins. "Skyfall" is my second guess.
Visual Effects: "Life of Pi."
Film Editing: "Argo" wins. "Zero Dark Thirty" is my second guess. William Goldenberg edited both these CIA film stories, so I'm pretty sure he'll get a golden statuette.
Makeup and Hairstyling: "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" wins. "Les Miserables" is my second guess.
Music (Original Score): "Life of Pi."
Music (Original Song): "Skyfall."
Sound Editing: "Zero Dark Thirty" wins. "Life of Pi" is my second guess.
Sound Mixing: "Les Miserables" wins." Recording all the singing live while filming was innovative and risky; here's the reward.
Writing (Adapted Screenplay): "Argo" wins. "Lincoln" is my second guess.
Writing (Original Screenplay): "Django Unchained" wins. "Zero Dark Thirty" is my second guess and "Amour" is my dark horse.
Foreign Language Film: "Amour."
Documentary Feature: "Searching for Sugar Man."
I've seen all of the nominees in each of the first 6 "main" categories and each of the winners I've chosen (and many of the other nominees) in the "minor" categories I've predicted.
I didn't see some of the Documentaries or Short Films up for awards this year yet, so I've abstained in three of those categories.
And I might change some of these predictions and would edit this post to reflect that before the awards ceremony.
We'll see how it goes on February 24th.
