My 19 in crt monitor has gone Norwegian Blue...

berift of life it rests in piece, it is an EX monitor. I guess it took one too many hits during this hurricane season. I am typing this on an antique Sony Trinitron 14" monitor, the color is great but there is a 1" black border around the 480x640 screen.

I am thinking of getting a flat panel to replace the dead monitor.

Anybody have suggestions on what to get?

I am looking for a 17" or 19" or larger if it is inexpensive enough.

Anybody know of any good deals out there?

I got this 18" lcd about 8 mos ago this. For $10 more you can get a 19". My brother bought his gf one of those and it's pretty nice for the price. The great thing about buying from walmart is that they have an excellent 90 day warranty: you don't like it, take it back, no questions asked. This one doesn't have digital inputs, and may not have the best specs, but its a billion times better than the gigantic crt it replaced, and for a good price. Native 1280 x 1024 good enough for me, crisp text (no gaming here).

Now's the time to upgrade to LCD, I think. Less presence on the desktop, less power use, less heat. $500 at BestBuy for a 17".

Don't ***** at me "idig" - I don't set the ******* prices at BestBuy. I paid less than that, but hey - that's what the website says, bucko.

For what it's worth, I remember looking at the Mitsu (and an "eMachine" one), and thinking that the Samsung had a much better picture and side viewing angle.
CircuitCity seems to have the 19" for almost the same price on sale with rebates. . .

I wasn't bitching at you, I was merely pointing out that paying $500 for a 17" LCD is a screw job unless he is buying something top of the line. Man, everyone is sensitive this week. We must be getting close to the OU game.

That Tiger Direct looks interesting, they have an outlet store near my apt in Miami, I might wander over there, thanks!

Well, I wandered over there and I just got back.

They had all sorts of flat panels, including some with TV tyners in them that were damn tempting, but I ended up getting a refurbished IBM G96 19" crt for $85.59 including tax and I am saving my money to build my own computer and I will get a flat panel then.

Hey man my IIyama 19 incher was 100% off. Now granted, that's not exactly a prestige brand, and I do not have a receipt, and there is always a chance that an IT equipment audit at my place of employment might turn up a discrepancy or two (I do love the aeron), but you cannot say that I have not received value for money.

Prestige brand?

for things like monitors and stuff like that there really isn't a prestige brand, they are all made in some factory in China or Korea by slave labor.

I really was looking for a flat panel, but here was this crt for a mere pittance and the color on the sample looked good for a crt, so I snagged it. It says IBM but no telling who made the thing.

The one I had before was a KDS that cost me $275 at Sams four years ago and that was a cheap one then, so I replaced it with a cheap one now.

Fab costs are going down for LCD's so by the time I am ready to get one they should be pretty cheap.

I got a 20 inch dell 2001FP and haven't seen any problems with Ghosting on FPS games and it plays movies just fine.

I payed $760, dell always has some deals going on so google for dell coupons and wait for a sale.

20 inch LCD are 1600*1200 native which is waht I was looking for.

I second the Dell 2001FP. Very clear. The 1801FP and 1701FP are also good. They also have 4 USB ports built in which is nice. They are also height and tilt adjustable and the screen can be rotated 90 degrees. Mos of the lower priced LCD's only let you adjust the tilt. If you don't care about surround sound or need desk shaking base, you can get a sound bar for 50 bucks that will let you clear off the old desk even more.
