I don't know how I'm just learning about Sam Baker. It seems he lives in Austin but he is totally new to me. If you like John Prine, Todd Snider, Richard Buckner, Townes Van Zandt, (I hate to say) Dylan, Wilco/Son Volt, you will probably like him.

Gurf Morlix (Lucinda Williams' former guitarist) has apparently really helped him a lot. He isn't listed on the US Americana charts, but he was recently shown as Number 1 on the UK charts, probably on the strength of a Bob Harris/BBC interview.

His MySpace stuff: The Link

His web site is strangely done but has some great interviews under the RADIO link. The Bob Harris BBC interview is fantastic. Also, the KGSR interview has some additional insight. The Link. I didn't get this year's KGSR CD so I don't know if he was on there. I don't remember him from others.

In short, he is from Itasca. WAMPUS CATS, HOLLA! In the late 80s, he was on a train in Peru when it was bombed by a terrorist. Everyone around him died. Although he survived, he lost most of his hearing and has a loud ringing in his ears. Had close to 20 surgeries. He had to start playing the guitar left-handing since his left hand was virtually destroyed. It was after this that he started really writing.

If any of you have additional info on him, please pass it along.
