6 DB package for Rice.

Good to hear. The dime is what were going to have to use a lot this year so I like us getting it going now. Also, "Were holding back for obvious reasons" is a good line to hear becasue we need to be better and this says we will be.

But wait, I thought according to people on this site, that Muschamp thought not getting sacks and giving up a lot of yards was a GOOD thing!

I read the article, and it sounds a lot like the same stuff we hear from the coordinator on the other side of the ball season after season.

I am not saying that he does not make any sense. It just sounds familiar.

I can understand why we would simplify coverages because we have young DB's. We have a veteran LB corps and D-line though, and we still are not getting effective pressure. Our DB's should not be holding back our blitz package. If we are "holding that back" so OU does not see them, well, that's the same crap we hear every year.

It sounds to me that the obvious reason he is referring to is the fact that he has a defensive backfield full of freshmen and they need time to learn this stuff.

Hey, thats fine. As long as we are ready to let it rip by the time OU comes around. I trust this dude. I like the way our offense looks more than our defense at this point, which is usually opposite because offenses usually grow more as the season progresses. In our case our defensive backs are young so it makes sense that will we progress more on this side of the ball. I hope he has something up his sleve which I do. I look for Bradford's QB rating to drop after he faces us. I look for a surprisingly low scoring game on the 11/11.

As far as learning goes, how do you think the average freshman college student would do in upper division courses? I don't think you can expect freshmen to master a complex defense in two games. It usually takes four years to get a degree for a reason

The "bells and whistles" being the DQ package, where we use two middle linebackers, John Chiles and Colt McCoy. Or at least that's what I read in my "Book of Stuff I Just Made Up."

I think the "holding back for obvious reasons" was in reference to the situation with the young DB's being banged up during two a days in August. He said many of them learn by repetition, but there's no reason to practice specific stuff if those who are going to be playing cannot practice. Therefore, it put them about 6-8 practices "behind". Now they are learning on the job...so they are holding back on some stuff, the obvious reasons being the DB's are YOUNG, first and foremost, and secondly, they have needed more reps and that has been slowed by preseason injury.

I was impressed with this guy. He actually says alot, he can get quite specific although that may be just to confuse the likes of me! But he made several very good points...the main one being, the face of college defense is changing with all the spread offenses. What worked 3-4 years ago isn't necessarily what is working today in defending the offenses.

I certainly wouldn't confuse him with anyone else, including Greg Davis.

I will wait until after OU, Missouri, and Tech to declare him a genius. He could lose all those and still turn out to be great, but if A&M beats us again no one on this team is worth much.
