Muschamp Fallout

There is so much early recruiting going on that there's not a lot of options. I'm not sure, but I imagine Florida has a long list of blue chips ready to sign in February. I'm not sure who Mack will hire, but you know he has the budget to hire the best. Not to mention the fact that UT defensive coordinator is a nice stepping stone to an SEC head coaching job.

Doubt we lose any to UF though might lose a couple to other teams but lets wait and see, recruiting is Mack's baby and he is best in the game at it.

I don't see a mass exodus of our recruits to Florida at this point. That state is talent-rich as it is. Even though FSU has made some strides recently (not unlike aggy here in Texas), UF is still king, and pulling in the lion's share of all that Florida talent.

However, as for Texas right now, I am more worried about our next-door neighbors - OU, OSU, aggy, LSU, Arky, even Baylor. They are all going to negatively recruit the **** out of us, with all the instability going on in our coaching ranks right now. They will be like sharks smelling blood in the water.

Hope we can get this fixed fast, or it's going to get ugly.

Question is will karma come into play? If any Texas recruit wants out so he can go aggy, Texas' entire recruiting program should be suspect.

This is the thread that we will update throughout on the recruiting talk with the 2011 class.

What we know...

Josh Turner: He told me last night he was solid to Texas. A person close to Turner said as long as defensive backs coach Duane Akina was at Texas, Turner's commitment was solid. Should Akina leave, all bets are off. Keep in my mind, Akina has been offered multiple jobs over the years.

Quincy Russell: Russell told Jeff Howe the hires are going to mean everything with his recruitment moving forward.

"This really sends me to the bottom of the barrell. I was already sad about Coach Tolly (former defensive tackles coach Mike Tolleson) leaving, now Coach Muschamp leaving, its like 'wow.' Everything changed in a matter of weeks. With everything happening so fast, this is a big question mark."

"I really don't know what I'm going to do. I want to see who they hire for the defensive tackles coach and for the defensive coordinator before I make any type of decision. I want to see what moves Coach Brown is going to make before I make my move." Russell told Howe last night.

If Russell does open things back up, Baylor is one school to keep an eye on.

Kendall Thompson: Thompson and his Carthage teammates are busy preparing to win a third straight state championship, so his focus is more on finishing his high school career as a part of history than anything. With that being said, he is a prospect who has rumored to have flirted with the idea of going to an LSU game in recent weeks.

"I really don't know how to react right now. I really don't know (I he'll open up his recruitment). I've got to sit down and discuss this with my family.(Muschamp) played a pretty big role in me wanting to go to Texas. We had a real good relationship." Thompson told Howe last night.

Should Thompson open up his recruitment, LSU is the team to watch as Thompson told me way back during his junior season that LSU was his childhood favorite.

*******UPDATE (per Gerry):

I just got off the phone with Daingerfield Steve Edmond. He said he is going to talk to his head coach, Barry Bowman, in the morning, but he is leaning to opening up his recruitment.

He feels burned as Coach Muschamp was at the school on Thursday, but understands the business.

Texas called him on the way back from their state semi-final win and told him Texas always hires the best coaches. It was Ken Rucker that made the call.

Edmond picked Texas over Florida and USC initially. Only Texas A&M has continued to make consistent effort recruiting him, however. Florida was/is his childhood favorite, but he doesn't think he would look there because Muschamp went there.

Bottom line, Edmond and his coach will talk before lunch Monday morning and he will make a decision on if he will re-open his recruitment. He's leaning to doing just that as of 10am today.

******UPDATE (per Gerry):
Just texted with North Shore OG Sedrick Flowers. He said he is still 100% committed to Texas.

********UPDATE (per Justin Hopkins):
I exchanged a couple of texts with Chris Westerman last night, the father of Christian. He had not heard the news yet, the funny part was we were texting about something else already when ESPN ran it. So I don't have any news to report on what they will do because he wasn't at home with Christian.

His reaction was: "Incredible, shot heard round the world." "A lot of stuff happening in Austin, we are having trouble keeping up with all of it."

Nothing too conclusive at all in that statement. I'm sure they will take the wait and see approach on the new hires before making any "rash" decisions.

********UPDATE (per Gerry):
Just spoke with Quandre Diggs. He said that as long as his position coach (Akina) is at Texas, everything is good.

**********UPDATE (per Jeff):
I just got off the phone with Cedar Park linebacker Chet Moss, who is making the short trip home after his official visit.

He said he's talked with Kendall Thompson and Steve Edmond since the news of Will Muschamp's departure. Moss said he feels good about both guys staying with Texas after speaking with them.

"I've talked with both of them and they actually sounded good to me," Moss said. "Its whatever - I think everybody was upset at first but now, I think everybody know that Texas is going to hire the best available coach."

Moss said he's going to do his best to keep the class together.

"I've talk with everybody who wasn't there and with everybody who was there," Moss said. "I think right now everybody is focused on getting to Texas and winning a few national championships over the next four years. That's our goal."

************UPDATE (per Jeff):
Just talked to San Antonio Stevens ATH Mykkele Thompson. He told me he had not yet heard of the Muschamp news and he was surprised when I asked him about it.

He said Duane Akina was at his game yesterday and he's supposed to talk with Akina later today so Akina can fill him in on what's going on with things.

Thompson told me that regardless of what has happened or will happen that he's solid to Texas.
"I'm still solid with my commitment and there's really nothing that's going to change that," Thompson said. "Texas is my dream school and it's always going to be a good school."

**********UPDATE (per Gerry):
Just spoke with Dulles HC Jim Creech. To his knowledge Sheroid Evans is solid to Texas. They (Creech and Evans) had talked about the possibility of Coach Muschamp getting head coaching opportunities (Georgia at the time mid-season) and Evans remained solid.

We'll stay on top of it. Like others, Akina remaining at Texas is huge for this class.

********UPDATE (per Jeff):
Just spoke with Miles Onyegbule. He's rock solid and here's what he had to say:

"I mean, its a business. Coach has to do what he has to do. I mean, an example could be a commit who loves OSU (Oklahoma State) and their offense because of Dana (Holgorsen). That would be naive because that guy is a hot commodity as a head coach. So I'm just happy for Coach (Muschamp). He's great and there's a reason he's headed there. I trust in Mack that he will bring in someone very good. Its Texas."

*******UPDATE (per Gerry):
Just spoke with Quandre Diggs. Like most guys, he's 100% committed to Texas. The only thing that could sway that is if Akina left and maybe Applewhite, but position coach is big.

He said they didn't find out about Muschamp leaving until dinner last night and everyone was pretty shocked, but they all understand that Coach Muschamp has to do what's best for him and his family. It's business.

He said Coach Brown told each and every recruit to call him if they had any questions and at Texas, they can go hire the best DC in America.

1:01pm Update (Bobby)

I exchanged a few texts with Bob Shipley. For those unaware, Brownwood lost a tough one to Carthage on Friday in the state semifinals.

Regardless, Jaxon Shipley is a solid commitment to Texas.

Here's the text exchange:

"Is Jaxon firm to Texas?"

"Yes! Unless they hire a wishbone OC haha"

To be fair, I've known Coach Shipley for 15+ years. I asked him if that could be on the record and he said yes.

***********UPDATE (per Jeff):
Apparently Chet Moss' feeling after talkingwith Kendall Thompson was spot on. This is what Thompson just texted me...

"Yeah, me and Texas are good! 100 percent going to Texas!"

We may get a few as well from both a new OC and DC. Right now we are only looking at who may leave, but the reverse holds as well. I do hope we can hold this class together though. Akina seems to be the guy that we really need to keep.

Some good news.

This is good news! And with Randy Shannon coming in -I just feel he will- this class will hold up and the 2012 class will be fine.
