Muschamp and recruits

Just out of curiosity, has Muschamp recruited, and landed any big fish? From what I've seen on Rivals etc. everyone he was recruiting for '09 went somewhere else. I know he got a late catch in a late blooming DE, but has he shown any of the Mack Brown lure magic? He is going to be the head coach in the near future, and hopefully can land a few big guns for us soon.

If this is not a "sacred cow" item not to be discussed around here, I would like to know too. I was wondering about this.

He better learn fast from the master, before he takes over. I didn't go all ga ga over the announcement of his being the "coach in waiting," because I dd not know much about how well he will do the recuiting job. Not that I have heard him to be bad at it or anything, but wanted more evidence .. Anybody has a thought? If not, I certainly hope Mack will stick around till Muschamp gets all up to speed on how to weave the magic.

I think Will will be fine. He reminds me of a young Bob Stoops. Now say what you want, but Stoops is darn good. He owns the big 12 even though he has trouble in BCS games. I am glad he is the heir. It would be nice if he would reel in a big fish for us though.

Muschamp was instrumental in convincing Sergio Kindle to forgo the draft. If that can reasonably be considered recruiting, and I’d say it can, then it counts as a major success in his first off-season.

From everything I’ve heard he’s the epitome of a player’s coach. His players clearly love him here and have apparently loved him at every position he’s held, even among jaded NFL vets who were years his senior. That reputation as a player’s coach is bound to serve him well in recruiting in the future. Give him some time to establish a rapport with the high school coaches around the state and I believe he'll be an exceptional recruiter.

Beyond that, winning obviates a lot of problems, especially with recruiting, and it’s tough to argue with Muschamp’s track record for producing winners.

You gotta think that Muschamp's real impact in recruiting will be from this point going forward. He signed his contract extention and "head coach in waiting" thing in the fall after all the guys from the 09 class had already been recruited. Now that he is sticking around the new classes, 2010 and beyond, will see this and it will have to factor into their decision making. I would also think that Mack will utilize him more in recruiting. If he is going to be the next head coach then he needs to get all the experience he can on this front. And who better to learn from than Mack.

If our D continues to play "Boom-Lights Out" he'll have no problems. If the D develops a trend of falling on its face in big games, then recruiting would not be at the top of his worry list.

OK, after a few responses, it appears that nobody has evidence of a SINGLE recruiting success so far from Muschamp, right? That is what concerns me.

That is OK; let us give him some more time. Hopefully he will come through, landing a prize recruit or two on his own, soon.

Look, I like him. Players coach, yes. Live wire and motivator, yes. Knows defense and coaches to the hilt, yes. But none of it will matter if he cannot land players in recruiting. Recruiting DOES matter. I do not want to go back to the scond half of the Akers years, or the McWilliams years or the Mackovic years (even though he landed a couple of big fishes). It scares me.

I think almost pulling Kirkpatrick and Jones out of SEC country can be considered successes. As someone else said...I think going forward will be the measuring stick. Muschamp has now had a year to establish relationships with coaches and up and coming players in Texas.

Almost landing....kinda like close only counting in horseshoes and hand grenades. BUT, I am glad we have WIll, and will have him when Mack leaves his post. I have a feeling Mack would have hung it up this year, had we been given the chance to beat Florida and won the title. IF we win it all this coming season, I think its Mack's last. He will ride off into the sunset with two titles and his name up there with Darrell ( no not on the stadium, just on paper ). I think Mack wants to enjoy the rest of his life and relax with Sally before he gets to the Joe Pa stage of life. Will knows that, and will wait to take over one of the greatest programs; if not the greatest program. Sure, there is a chance that if Mack stays on through 2012 or so that Will could get an offer from a top program or great situation, and bolt.....Let's just hope Rodriquez has a "little' success at Michigan, and aggy doesn't fire Sherman before then.

i think it's ok for a guy to ask a question without it seeming like he doesn't like muschamp.

i think coach boom was a great get. he may still have some growth areas in recruiting.

i think "almosts" are the opposite of success. it's a lot of time spent on a recruit that sees Texas as #2.

Coordinators aren't typically the "top recruiter" for a player. However, I read that Dixon chose Texas because of Boom and if you look at the defensive players already committed I would say he's had a huge impact on recruiting. Honestly, I can't see how there's even a question.

The only concern I have from a recruiting standpoint right now is Applewhite. Not from recruiting in general (appears he struck out in 07-08, but did help committ the top QB this year), but the fact that he's our RB's coach. It had an impact on D. Scott and if we lose the #1 RB in the country who only lives 45 minutes North of campus then I think there will start to be a bigger spotlight on it. With the lack of RB's, running game, we should be able to land LS.

I agree with those who say Muschamp's recruiting acumen is gonna be judged more or less from this point on.

He's been here a year, high school coaches are getting to know him, and his future with UT is supposedly in place. He also gets the chance to learn recruiting from Mack, the best there is.

Muschamp's shown no indication that he can't recruit, so I don't see any reason to worry just yet.

I think Major got Connor Wood for us, so don't knock Major. Lache Seastrunk has been courted by none other than Mack himself for about two years, so don't blame Major when he goes to USC. Sometimes a guy just likes another town better than others.

I totally agree with TexanWolv.

Look, Mack has Texas bolted down pretty well, can we agree on that? Therefore, why not send one of his best after top 100 guys from other parts of the country. Texas can afford to "waste" time on a talent like Dre Kirkpatrick....because Texas is at the point where Dre would have just been gravy on an already great class.

Kind of the "you miss 100% of the shots you don't take" type thing imo

Muschamp was the featured speaker at a high school coaches' clinic this weekend in San Antonio. From the interview he gave on TV sports last night, the audience was standing room only.

Give him time, he will build the rapport necessary. One can wonder how much recruiting he was asked to do this year until after the season, due to the youth and new scheme of our defense.

I have no doubt that if he chose, he could walk across the San Antonio River without using the bridge.

I think Squall's right that out of state recruiting shouldn't be overlooked. If anyone can afford to do it, we can. The only caveat to that is I wouldn't want Texas high school coaches to think that our next head coach is more interested in OOS recruits than the local boys.

I wasn't aware of the Rivals section on coaches either. I would like to see some more info though. For example, some 40 times, bench press, verticals??

I was impressed that, although we were latecomers in recruiting Kirkpatrick, Muschamp had us a close second to his home-state school. Pretty tough assignment to outrecruit Saban in 'Bama.

We'll see if WC can help reel in some of the remaining big fish like Jeffcoat for '10.
