MSG Substitute, Help

My chili recipe calls for a package of msg. What is a substitute for it?
I was told by a friend a Tbs of salt, but that seems like too much, then I looked online and found sugar.

I am lost, thanks

You don't need MSG or a substitute. Just add some seasoning (salt, black pepper, paprika, cayenne, etc) until it tastes good to you. You don't need to add MSG.

According to Alton Brown of "Good Eats" fame on the Food Network, ordinary white mushrooms have a natural form of MSG in them. Maybe you could chop up a cup or so of mushrooms and throw them in the chili, if you chop them pretty well you probably won't even be able to tell that there are mushrooms in there at all.

If beans in chili should be punishable by death, as some on Hornfans frequently suggest, mushrooms will probably get you a fate worse than death.
