Space Angel was one of those 'just barely' animated series where largely still photos had moving mouths super-imposed on the face. Every once in a while they would show a hand toggling the power switch, which led to some sort of aerosol sound and a spray of jet propulsion.
Kitirik! Wow, what a blast from the past. I went to the studio for her show once. Somebody's birthday I think, maybe mine for all I remember.
Wasn’t Clutch Cargo the cartoon where the characters’ mouths were cut out and a real person’s mouth was inserted? That was kind of creepy, maybe it was another cartoon, I’m not sure.
I don't think I ever watched an entire episode, the human looking mouths on static drawings was just too creepy and the stories were lame. Sorry, Clutch. Sorry, Spinner. Sorry, Paddlefoot.
Jonny Quest was awesome. Still remember discovering it on my grandma's TV one saturday morning. This was '69 or '70.
Not unlike Space Angel, there was a realism to the artistic renditions that made JQ instantly notable as a 'sophisticated' cartoon. I was hooked (the first image I remember seeing was a gargoyle coming down off of a ledge to shoot or drug a scientist -- something like that). All of the black ink they used to create shadow and atmosphere was unusual, especially in the frogmen/laser episode. Also, the theme music to Jonny Quest was unparalleled greatness -- son as it started and the various action images began flashing you knew it was coming down and coming down hard.
HonMen to the Spider-Man animated series for having a great theme song and, once Ralph Bakshi took over, some incredibly dark art work, fantastical storylines, and insane scoring (check out he Mole Men episode for just wacked out jazz fusion music).
