MP3 Players

I need to get my soon to be 12 year old a birthday present. I think he would like an iPod. What would you recommend for someone that age? I was thinking an iPod classic (120GB), but it is about $200. And 12 year olds lose and break things. Anyway, tell me what you would do.

I think its a great idea. I have two cheap ones for for my kids. If gives me (I was a music composition major in college and now I'm and orchestra buyer) an opportunity to at least sneak a few things I want them to listen too on there.

One girl really likes High School musical, so I added a few older ones (West Side Story & the Music Man). Another likes My Chemical Romance so I added some later Beatles & Queen. I also threw in some John Williams sound tracks. Later, I added some more popular classical music (Mars, Ode to Joy, ect...)

So, I think they have at least some understanding of music that isn't on top 40 radio.

On the flip side. I wouldn't worry about getting an expensive one. They're going to break/loose them. And they're not going to need 500 songs on there right now either. I would go to walmart and get a cheap one. You can get a decent one for under $50.

Cool. I wish I knew how to play an instrument. I took guitar lessons once when I was young and I was involved in music in 5th/6th grade, but I don't remember anything now. Plus, I can't carry a tune.

Anyway, thanks for the advice.

Don't spoil him-just make him play music off of his phone like the other 11 year olds.

But seriously, I don't know how you avoided it as long as you have. My kids got old ipod minis around 6. One was an old one we had around the house and we bought the other from a friend. You can also get them off of Craigslist and amazon for $70 or less. Nothing fancy, but they come in colors and they have always held up well.

The only risk I see with young kids is damaging their hearing, so we have always made them use "kids" headphones that regulate the volume separately. Sony makes them and you can get them at BB.

woot.com has 2GB Sansa Clip for $15 right now (refurbished). They are great little players that also have an FM receiver. Looks like they are about to sell out though...

that would be phenomenal for football games. You can listen to Craig Way call the game while watching it live and when they do the long drawn out tv timeouts or plugging sponsors you can listen to music.

^^^^^

Thats what I thought too. I also was thinking how great it would be to some sort of sports jogging, hiking, or at one of the kids games.

But, I've never been able to find one where the tuner worked very well....

I've always found people listening to the radio at games tacky. I mean, the only people I remember doing it are Leinart's dad during the Rose Bowl and Bartman. Not really the best company to be in. TV timeouts are brutal, but listen to the band or talk to somebody or something.

I dunno, having one ear bud in is sort of a good source of info. You are not nec. listening to the game since you see it in front of you. What you do get is info on replays as the booth looks at it, tidbits on yardage, stats and other stories going on. Sideline reports and Craigs tidbits on things which come in handy for a game, just not a talk show all the time.

You are not ignoring people around you. I am glad when somebody has a radio to give us info on things like how many completions in a row Colt has, what that pass signified for player X, etc...

We have several scattered amongst my kids. I will say that for an MP3 player the nano is a better choice than the touch or classic. If you need the video and wifi then different story. I also think that I prefer ones that I can use windows to drag and drop files over the apples that force me to use Itunes.

ipods play mp3s, but they aren't 'mp3' players. ipods and Apple are evil and should be avoided at all costs. itunes... I love it.. they don't sell mp3 songs there, but you can buy an mpeg4 song and then wait 30 minutes for it to convert it to mp3 format.
Apple is the Aggie of the tech world.... only worse.

celis mp3 is not the primary format for Apple digital music players play mp4 or AAC formatted music. Go to itunes and download and you will get an mp4/AAC formatted song, not mp3. Apple/itunes songs can be converted to mp3 to play on any other maker's players, but they are formatted to ONLY work on Apple.

I understand that. But Ipods can play mp3s. It's not what their stupid store sells but it can play them.

Itunes sucks and the fact that you can't buy mp3s from apple sucks.
