I just bought a 256mb Rio Cali sport mp3 player. I want to get a 512 mb card for it but they seem to have different kinds (flash card, secure digital, etc...). I don't know the difference and just want one that stores as many songs as possible.

A second question is that the instructions say if I put the music in WMA format instead of MP3 format I can squeeze in twice as many songs. How the hell do I do that?

There are various types of flash memory. You need to get whatever fits on the Rio which seems to be Secure Digital or MMC. Storage size is measured in MBs. 512 MBs in SD is the same as 512MBs in MMC etc.

I'd assume WMA vs MP3 would be decided when you encode your songs. The presumption is that WMA files are twice as small as MP3s at the same quality setting.

actually, i'd just send the songs to the mp3 player from windows media player.

winmedia can handle both wmas and mp3s and can write it to most devices (i'm pretty sure that yours is supported thru winmedia).

thats what i do with my lyra and compact flash.
