Moving?

My rent has gone up 7% after a year at my apartment.
I like living there but wouldn't mind living in a bigger space or even getting a duplex or house.
I live in Southwest Austin and really want to stay there.
Anyone know what I should do?
I have to tell my apartment this week what I am gonna do.

I am planning on looking around.
Willing to pay around $700-$750 a month.
Can that get me a nice duplex or rent home in this area?

Should I get an apartment locater?
Can I go to the office and bargain with my current apartment?

Trying to deal with your current apartment complex would probably be harder than getting you to believe in God.

In any case, I'd move and cash in on a good special elsewhere. Of course, that's a temporary fix as your rates will go up there eventually.

ryan, that is standard at every apartment. you move in for X and when you lease is up they renew at Y, which is usually in the 5%-10% range. i think it is part of their business model or something.

You can definately bargain with your current apartment.

Find an apartment in the area for the price you are currently paying (or close to it), and tell them you don't want to move but will if they don't keep the rent the same.

East of IH 35, near Disch Falk and the softball field (North of 26th/Dean Keaton) is a nice little neighborhood. A buddy of mine used to manage an apartment complex called French Place and it was pretty nice back then (don't know about now).

That neighborhood is also a pretty cool little area. I don't know what house rent is like there, but it's probably doable with a roommate.

see if they will let you go month-to month through the summer, so you won't be so pressed for time.

I remember when apts gave you half off the rent if you stayed through the summer in Austin. I guess I'm an old fart

So as not to be forced to make a hasty decision, the consequences of which you will be dealing with for a whole year. I'm not talking about STAYING on a month to month, just giving yourself another 30 days to research all your options thoroughly.
