Moving to the East Bay

I just got a dream job in Oakland and start there the middle of November. The pay isn't particularly great so I'm going to have to go back to living with roommates. There seem to be a lot of Bay Area folks on here so I'd like to get some recommendations on areas/neighborhoods to live in the East Bay. I'll be heading out the last weekend in October to check out the area myself but wanted to get started on some of the groundwork.

A little about myself: 26 year-old life-long Texan. Grew up in Round Rock, went to school at UT, and have worked at UT for the last three years. I want to live in a neighborhood where I don't necessarily need a car; I like the idea of walking to restaurants, shops, bars, movie theatres, etc. My job is right off the Coliseum BART stop.

Most importantly, where do Horn fans hang out for games?

I lived in the east bay a couple of times, last moving out in 2003. Both episodes were in the San Ramon Valley area, living in Sarn Ramon, Danville, and Alamo. If your are young and single, that is not your area. I'd recommend staying in Oakland, northward of your job. Lake Merrit, downtown, etc.

Game watching used to be decent in SF at the Final Final. But I think the crowd has moved from there.

Try the Jack London square area right on the waterfront. Been a few years since I was there but I think you can walk to everything you mention and there are a bunch of old buildings that have been converted to condos/apartments.
