Moving to Portland, OR-need advice

My job is moving me to Portland in a couple weeks and I know nothing about Portland. I am looking for an apartment now but have no idea which areas are nice and which are not. My job is located between the woodstock and happy valley areas, so I guess sorta SE portland. I would like to live near work if possible.
Can anyone give some input on which areas are nicer than others?
