Louisville is a pretty town. The Ohio river runs along its northern border. For trivia people, it is interesting to note that the Ohio is bigger than the Mississippi when they meet. There are several big events which take place along the river that are tied to the Kentucky Derby (first week of May). Restaurants are plentiful.
The weather is much colder and gloomier than the cities to the south like Nashville and Atlanta. It is much closer to Indianapolis and Cincinnati weather (Cinc. is about 1 hr. east of Louisville). I think Louisville has had 1 nice day in March. Otherwise it has been on the cold side and primarily overcast. Allergies are bad since it is wet and in the Ohio Valley.
The public schools are better in Oldham county (City of Prospect).
The city is more Midwest in behavior and food. You can find a couple good barbeque places but they aren't plentiful. More than likely you will end up learning how to smoke meats yourself.
There isn't a whole lot going on as far as night life at least compared to Austin. However, there is a strong play community/district. City life will be much improved in my opinion as the Waterfront project progresses. Cincy makes great use of the waterfront in Newport, KY. Louisville hasn't done the same thing, but plans are in the works. They are currently renovating an old railroad bridge to make it into a pedestrian bridge that crosses from KY to Indiana. I am sure once that is completed a new plaza will make greater use of the river.
In the past, Louisville has been conservative as far as development is concerned. This has kept Louisville nice but slow. It hasn't brought in a major sports team and relies on the Bats farm league and Univ. of Louisville sports. This is changing and Louisville is becoming more progressive.
All in all, it seems like a pretty good place to live.
I'll find out for you. I'm old, married, and go to sleep at 9:42pm. Fortunately, I have friends who I live vicariously through. Are you looking to buy or rent? What price range are you interested in?
So far I've been told that you should get an apartment near St. Mathews or the Highlands. The good looking single woman I asked, said she would live in the Highlands.
I will be working off of Main street by the river. Thanks for the info. I am flying up there tomorrow, but it is a short trip so I don't think I will have any time to tour the city.
