Moving on to THE issue

Vol Horn 4 Life

Good Bye To All The Rest!
This is a serious question to the dems on this board. I do not want to see name calling because that helps nothing (as if we'll solve the country's problems here at the west mall).

It's already been said today that if the House doesn't compromise and agree to tax increases it will be the republicans fault the country goes over the fiscal cliff.

Should the GOP agree to these hikes if the Dems agree to significant entitlement cuts to reduce spending, will they be willing to match the compromise?

Surely we all know that no amount of tax increases can support the current spending spree. I'm willing to pay more to reduce the debt if they agree to seriously cut spending and not just spend more as taxes are increased.

You could've saved yourself a lot of typing by asking whether Simpson-Bowles (sp??) is still on the table. Obama was on board before, and probably would be still.

I know most on this site don't want to acknowledge it, but Obama is a moderate on most issues (except healthcare). He is forced to the left to get anything done because the GOP centrists won't work with him. But if they would, he'd be ready to wheel and deal.

Boehner offered a 'deal" to DemsThe Link

from WaPo article
While Boehner suggested that Republicans would continue to oppose Obama’s plan to take “a larger share of what the American people earn through higher tax rates,” he said the party is open to “increased revenue . . . as the by-product of a growing economy, energized by a simpler, cleaner, fairer tax code, with fewer loopholes, and lower rates for all.”

it is at least a start for a dialogue

Agree, the cuts are cuts in current spending not future increases and cuts begin at the same time taxes increase.

I'm no tax expert so who could say how much in spending cuts combined with how much in tax increases would be required to make a significant dent? I agree with Boehner that we should start with eliminating loopholes.

Why wait to start discussions? And I'm not discussing issues, I'm discussing this one issue because our political heroes have less than eight weeks to come to an agreement.

We aren't in Washington and what we discuss has no bearing on what they do in Washington. My position doesn't change. If there is compromise from both sides it works for me. If I have to pay more for the Dems to keep on with the blank check book then no deal. I'll fight till the bitter end to keep politicians from wasting my money. I want to know if you are willing to compromise too or is it a one way street?

I do believe that politicians can't be trusted to take immediate tax revenue now for tenuous pledges of spending cuts in the future.

Neither of the negotiators can control what future administrations or congressional branches decide to do so we need real cuts ASAP.

I should not be shocked even though I am at the complete lack of response by liberals to my direct question about compromise.

See to libs, compromise is simply republicans agreeing to their ways. I'm willing to compromise by giving more my money if you are willing to significantly cut current spending immediately. Both combined will reduce the debt, but just giving you more money to spend is just Christmas all year. Are you willing to compromise?

Mich, read the thread and answer the question. It was directed at you and your buddies not some press clipping. I am willing to pay more are you willing to accept immediate entitlement cuts?

I'm not willing to pay anymore. I believe I'm already paying my "fair share". I am perfectly ready to watch our country get downgraded again and watch some more financial armageddon happen. The people of America, according to liberals, voted for this. They wanted these people in charge. They are NOT going to change their ways. They are going to as they say "kick the can" down the road as many times as they are allowed to. If you think differently, I believe you are being naive. They are not going to take the extra revenue from more taxes and apply it to the debt. They are going to use it to come up with new ways to spend it. It is going to take something along the lines of a full scale depression to make people think otherwise. My Dad always said "the chickens come home to roost". The sooner the better.

I am fine with Simpson-Bowles or something reasonably similar. I believe Boehner announced today that the House will not agree to any tax increases. I guess there is your compromise. I actually am fine with getting rid of the Bush era tax cuts for everyone. I would like the spending cuts phased in and less draconian.

FNL - you nailed it. Maybe we should let them do what they want because they won. It will destroy the economy, but maybe if it happens sooner rather than later it will make people think. Nah, that's not going to happen. Although maybe when, during a depression, their "free stuff" goes away, they will wonder how this all happened (but will still blame it on Bush and Republicans.)

I think there can be some compromise and I don't think having rich people's tax rates locked in at or near historic lows is something we have to do to have a fair and prosperous America. If House Republicans can save face by lowering rates and closing loopholes, that's probably a good thing. With Social Security and Medicare taxes blue collar working guys have a higher effective tax rate than Mitt Romney and I think money in the hands of people who work for it is at least as stimulative to the economy as guys who have mansions in three states.

Threads go off topic so quickly. I'm not asking if anyone thinks the politicians will compromise, I'm asking about your willingness.

I see more blame being thrown around on this board about republicans this and democrats that, but not one person here but me has said they are willing to compromise if the other side does.

The ******* problem isn't Washington, its everyone. They are doing exactly what we ask them to do.

I do not want to compromise. I believe I have done enough of that. The Dems did not compromise for the last 4 years. Let them continue to take us over the fiscal cliff. America needs a huge slap in the face.

Vol Horn 4 Life, did you read my post? I am fine with Simpson Bowles or a reasonable equivalent. I am positive that Obama is. How is this difficult to understand?

Simpson Bowles isn't a compromise. That's a piece of **** that's already going to happen if they don't work hard on a real solution. How hard is that to understand?

Of course. Nothing will happen without compromise. It is assured by our system of checks and balances.
It is time for reasonable ways to reduce spending, and increase revenue, both necessary to bring the budget closer to balance as the economy gradually improves.

To everybody who's having big orgasms over Simpson-Bowles, you guys do know that the Simpson-Bowles Commission rejected Simpson-Bowles, right?

only way they go along is if cuts start now. otherwise it is alll nonsense. We are about to find out if obama actually does have america's best interest at heart. he doesn't hav eot face re-election and now can make the needed cuts without retribution. let's see what he does. my guess is more spending, finger pointing and incompetence, but that is simply based on actual past results. maybe things have changed.

i'm sorry, but this idea that the effective tax rates paid by many middle class earners is greater than Mitt Romney's is pure class warfare. Capital gains taxes should not be any higher than 18%. The government is already raiding the profits off those gains at a max of 35% before it even gets to the investor, who then pays another 15% on what's left.

Raiding our investment returns because some idiots don't understand how capital gains are really taxed is pure B.S. If those people weren't burdened by things like American Idol, they might understand how finances really work.
