Congratulations to the Horns on a solid season which was a breath of fresh air given the recent past. They lost four games all of which could have been won but were lost due to mistakes within their control (even today). Their still needs to be much improvement.

1. Herman’s in game decisions and clock management must improve, it cost us today, maybe wvu and osu games. Possibly Maryland also by chasing points at the end of the half when he didn’t need to.

2. O-line still needs to improve. If they can improve by as much next year as they did this year over 2017 we might be talking about something.

3. Special teams must be a priority. What we watched this year cannot continue if they want to be in the championship mix.

4. Playing with discipline and eliminating stooopid penalties. This team has no toes or feet left with how many times they shot themselves in the foot. If these are eliminated or greatly reduced today, we might be conference champions.

5. Orlando needs to rip out the three man front from his defensive playbook. Hopefully he finds a beast at the nose tackle (maybe omoro? Grows into that beast when he turns 18 sometime next year.

Looking forward to next year and keep hope alive.

Agree totally with your #4 above. Can anyone explain to me how a team can have so many false starts than this team has this season? It's backyard football, "Snap on two!" First and goal at the ou 1.5 yard line. As the team was lining up I yelled, "Please, no false start!". BOOM, yellow flag. False start. Just wow.

With regards to #4, a 3-3-5 defense could work well in the Big 12, if you have good personnel to run it.
Maybe if you have an elite rush LB that is generally the fourth pass rusher. But to me it allows way to many running lanes. A strong four man front, cuts that down and if you can get consistent pressure from those four that is how you stop the aerial show (assuming your db's can cover).

As next year comes (and the next and the next), you’ll c better players at each position....if nothing else they’ll be used to winning (and therefore hence, not losing)...

Replace #1 with a need for LBs with speed

#2 exploit the opponents weaknesses, this requires watching film.

#3 Why does our QB stare down outside receivers? Since Stoops arrived, OU has not covered the middle of the field. Today we missed throwing to a wide open receiver no less than four times. This scenario has been repeated every game. That's lack of coaching

Discipline must improve, and that includes NEVER AGAIN getting a delay of game penalty on first down.

We have moved from a Prius to an Expedition, but we paid for a Bentley.

2 years in after horrible years of play. We are contending and just played for the Big 12 Ship as they call it. It just amazes me how Texas fans expect immediate results. We are on pace for stability and success for years to come. Rose colored glasses, YUP!

We lose three senior starters plus Beck. Will their replacements be able to fill in and perhaps be an upgrade.? Thoughts?

Problem is even with bad DB play, the holding and presnap penalties, and questionable game coaching decisions, this team could just as easily been 13-0 now instead of 9-4 if not for ill-timed brain farts in each of the losses. That is the frustrating issue.

We had a lot of "tenured mediocrity" at the top of the o-line depth chart. It really depends on the young guys coming up, but they certainly all have a higher ceiling than our interior line. Our guards and center have been mediocre all year - which has been a dramatic improvement, so I'm not knocking those guys. I'm grateful for their work and what they've accomplished, but they're all pretty limited in their own ways. Until we start getting a better, more consistent middle push and better communication on our inside pass rush, we'll see games like this.

Herman's vision for this team is one that can grind the heart out of a team in the fourth quarter. If you want to know why that didn't happen on Saturday, check out the yards per carry in the run game.

It is not about expecting 'immediate results.' It is about expecting competent coaching that produces competent play on the field. The stupid penalties and the lack of fundamentals is something that ANY fan should be concerned about. Those are the sorts of things that should not be occurring with a 7th grade "B" team, much less on the field with a major college team seeking to regain a place in the perennial top-10 lists...

I agree with almost all of this with a few tweaks, and I have added additional perspective:

1. Herman’s in game decisions and clock management must improve.

To win championships, TH has to avoid the equivalent of coaching turnovers. He hasn’t shown enough growth in this area yet.

2. O-line still needs to improve.

While true, as stated on another thread, to go through a year without virtually any attrition is pretty unusual. I hope we can build on the growth of this year.

3. Special teams must be a priority.

The punting and kicking should improve. What I would like to see is a breakaway threat.

4. Playing with discipline and eliminating stooopid penalties.

Yesterday was terrible, and we do need to improve in this area. But yesterday seems like an aberration. But the dumb penalties need to be eliminated, at least reduced considerably.

5. Orlando needs to rip out the three man front from his defensive playbook.

I might disagree here. We made OU one dimensional yesterday. The scheme is less of an issue for me. We just need better players populating our front 6-7 although we had a few this year. I hope that the new corners will come up to speed quickly. They’ll need to.

Orlando does need to be more creative, and more deceptive with his blitzes, and coverages. We telegraph what we are going to do too often.

Kudos:

Our ball security was stellar, perhaps the best I can remember. We seemed to win the TO battle in almost every game, which probably had a lot to do with our consistent competitiveness.

Sam - He emerged as a highly proficient game manager and he could and should be one of the best QBs in the country next year.

Other:

Backup QB - We need to have someone ready who can take over without skipping a beat. A QB that challenges the defense.

My biggest concern for 2019 is the D, and replacing the line, LBs, and corners. We’re going to be very young and very inexperienced. How quickly they come along will dictate how well we do next year.

I don’t disagree with your points about the issues in today’s game. But when you look at the season as a whole, were in every game and very well could have had 1 loss headed into this game, and could have pulled this one out if some calls would have and should have gone our way. Could you truly say, 2 years ago, we would be in any discussion about a New Years 6 game. Did we make some mistakes today, yeah, but so did OU and even the almighty Alabama. I for one will trust thi coaching staff and believe that they know a hell of a lot more about coaching fundamentals than either of us. The future is bright my friend. Let’s just enjoy the ride.

Good points in this thread
Lots to work on to become elite again but given the last decade I have a hard time being dissatisfied with the program today

On the bright side, a substantial number of those should be gone once Boyd is off of the campus. I cannot recall a single player being flagged SO many times for the same stupidity across the entirety of a season as Boyd was this season. I am sure somewhere there IS such a player that cost their team in the same manner, but Boyd HAS to go...and when he is gone, the stupidity goes with him.

Let us not forget that he cost Texas an interception when he decided, once again, that a facemask is a handle...and he was not even anywhere CLOSE to the play in question...

We had that this year...unfortunately, Shane was rarely given an opportunity. I do not believe a backup has to be a clone of the starter. Shane has a different skillset. I believe that some of Sam's passes yesterday would have been more on the mark had Shane been used against Kansas to give Sam's wounded wing an extra week to have healed.
