Movies to Get in HD

I wanted to get HF's opinion on what movies that are must-haves in HD. I have the Bourne trilogy, 300, Transformers, Knocked Up, and Blazing Saddles. My opinion on old movies is that you shouldn't get the HD versions because you cannot get much better than digitally remastered; black&white, heck no.

Action movies are ones I think are must haves in HD. I got a Blu-ray player for XMAS so I am looking for suggestions in either format. One of my 1st BD movies will be the Pirates trilogy.
 
I've heard the transfer for Hot Fuzz is supposed to be reference quality, and I bet The Fifth Element looks spectacular. Older movies can still benefit, for example, I've seen really positive reviews for The Shining. I would just check reviews on amazon to make sure the transfer is up to par before buying a movie you're interested in.
 
Absolutely get pirates on Blu-Ray. I think those are some of the best titles for PQ & Audio. The 2nd one is probably the best out of the three, in my opinion. Any other movie by Disney is also sure to be a home run. Casino Royale, Die Hard 4, Simpsons, and Cars are some to consider as well.
 
So where do we stand on the HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray fued. It seems to me that blu-ray is getting more love, i see blu ray commercials all the time but never HD-DVD.

I did see a player in the paper that had blu-ray AND hd-dvd compatible, seems pretty cool
 
Not sure if they are out in either format but Flags of our Fathers & Letters from Iwo Jima were amazing. I downloaded the HD versions from Xbox Live Marketplace.
 
Don't sleep on B&W movies in HD. Keep in mind that film has a higher res than HD, and it makes for amazing HD. Its just like wondering how a traditionally animated film could benefit from HD. Well, they just do. Better contrast, more accurate color etc.
 
I'm probably going to get an HDDVD player in a few months. I need a new hard drive first. Anyway the first buy will definitely be blazing saddles. I hope to Netflix discs mostly but I haven't really looked into what they have.
 
I think there are several possible outcomes-

1. Blu-Ray wins format war because of better memory and better strategy (tie-in to PS3 putting Blu-Ray players in more homes). HD-DVD players are now just upconverting players for regular DVDs, and the modern day equivalent of laser disc players foralready purchased HD-DVDs.

2. HD-DVD wins format war by cutting player prices so much that the players are more widespread. See above for Blu-Ray players for this scenario.

3. Both formats continue. After all, the gaming market supports Play Stations and XBoxes both, and people don't have to have a HD player to watch a movie.

I think option 3 is more likely than a lot of people think. The problem with this format war is that the only way for one side to get a decisive victory, they need to develop a superior function AND price it to allow the market to jump all over it.

Edited- just ordered "2001" and "Thre Searchers" online. I have never seen "The Searchers", and hope it is one of the great cinematographied films of the '50s, when they were doing some new things with film color.
 
It ain't like Beta vs VHS cause you can make a combined player pretty cheap.

FYI, I was at Fry's yesterday and they advised me to wait 6 months before getting a HD DVD player because the new format (120hz) will be issued.

I have a 1080 (120hz) Samsung HD LCD and the Fry guy said watching 120hz HD DVDs with matching TV processor will be stunning.
 
Top Gun (Blu Ray or HD DVD)

not sure why, but when those LDs came out, the first thing we got was Top Gun

When DVDs showed up on the market, the first DVD we got was Top Gun.

So naturally, my first movie to purchase on whoever wins the format war (Blu Ray or HD DVD) will be Top Gun...
