Movie Sequels That Are Better Than The Original...

....are contrary to how it often turns out.

This was an interesting discussion on another board.

I'll start:

"Aliens" was better than "Alien."

"From Russia With Love" was better than "Dr. No."

"Godfather II" was better than "Godfather I."

"Dawn of the Dead" was better than "Night of the Living Dead."

I think the "Bourne Trilogy" got better every time and the best of the "Mission Impossible" movie series was the last one.

Just my opinion....

There are some others I can think of but I'll see if other posters list any of them.

Your thoughts and opinions?

Comic book/superhero movies seem to get better the second time around:

-Superman 2
-X-Men 2
-Spider-Man 2

Also, "Before Sunset." I thought "Before Sunrise" was a nice, charming little film, but I was surprised to find its sequel to be so emotionally charged. I guess revisiting those characters after ten years and seeing them reflect over their lives since the original story, forces one to do the same.

Director's cut Aliens was the best of the series. The marines had these automatic guns and were not *******.

On Aliens v. Aliens -- hard for me to say which was better because they were so different. ALien was all about Ridley Scott builing an atmosphere, creating a claustrophobic feel, building suspense, and finally revealing the villian. Aliens was wholly different, with James Cameron focusing on special effects and action. Both were very good, it's just hard to compare them and say one was better.
I'll say this: both were far better than Alien 3, which pretty much sucked. I actually think Alien:Resurrection is better than the third installment.

The Lord of the Rings movies progressively got better, in my opinion, but the flow of those movies and they way they were made kind of make them like one giant movie.

Wrath of Khan is the most obvious example, because it's just so much better than all of those other movies, particularly the first one.

Road Warrior following Mad Max.

I agree with Basketball Jones about the Alien movies. I still think the first is the better movie, but they are both very, very good. In someways, Cameron takes the subtext of the first movie and just raises it to the surface. Throw in a little Vietnam allegory and you've created a very good action movie.

I think Alien has more going on under the surface and I have never been so uneasy and filled with dread in movie as I was with Alien.

The sequel that never was: Buckaroo Bonzai. I thought they were setting up a pretty fun franchise with that movie, but it didn't do well enough at the box office.

Terminator 2 was the best sequel ever made

Others:

Evil Dead 2
Toy Story 2

I don't consider movies that were written to continue the story of the first (i.e. Lord of the Rings, Kill Bill, Star Wars)

Indiana III - my favorite of the bunch, though I do love the first installment

May get blasted for this, but..

Back to the Future II - I LOVED the first one given its novelty, but the second one is so entertaining. I love the added twist of a yet another layer on top of a layer on top of time. Third installment was an abortion.

Totally agree on Toy Story II and X-Men II

Terminator 2, Spiderman 2, X2, and Mad Max 2 are only ones I can think of. I did enjoy For a Few more Dollars more than A Fistful of Dollars.

I don't know if you can call it a traditional sequel but I think Kill Bill: Vol 2 was better than Kill Bill: Vol. 1.
