Movie: Bill Cunningham New York

Bill Cunningham is basically a street-fashion photographer for the NY Times. He wears a French-garbageman blue smock, rides a Schwinn bike around Manhattan, and is over 80 years old. Quite a guy.

He truly loves what he does.

This movie reminded me of "Tom Dowd and the Language of Music", both being about men who were passionate about their work.

Even if you don't like fashion, BCNY is worth watching.

BCNY Ebert Review

I saw that while browsing Netflix recently but hadn't put it in the queue yet. May have to do so now, it looks interesting. I love films about creatives and the creative process.

Last night I watched My Architect, A Son’s Journey on Netflix (IMDB link), about Louis Kahn’s son’s exploration into the mysterious life and death of his famous architect father. Recommended if you like that sort of thing. Includes Philip Johnson, I.M. Pei, Robert A.M. Stern and Frank Gehry in the interviews about Kahn.

Glad you liked it. Check out "Tom Dowd & the Language of Music" if you haven't seen it yet. Dowd is similar, in a way, to Cunningham in that both men did what they loved and loved what they did and didn't care about money. And both were probably the best in the world at what they did.

I loved that moment late in the film where the interviewer was asking Bill some personal questions. Something clicked in him, I thought, that suggested maybe some family baggage of some kind in his past that he didn't speak about. A very interesting character, and his passion and enthusiasm for the work was almost contagious.
